And then all that information based on your purchases is sold to other companies for marketing and adverts targeted for you. And if any of those companies get hacked, your information is on the internet in yet another database being sold or given to every hacker.

So someone who hadn't actively been looking at it probably wouldn't have noticed but it seriously threw me off to watch it change. And it was late in the afternoon on a Friday.
Desolder the control board and add your own. You can add wifi, Bluetooth, matter, zigbee - whatever protocol you want. I have a home assistant server with a zigbee mesh, so that would be my choice. I currently have a larger display at the front door with weather forecast and travel time to everyone's morning destination.
