Let's get this bread

They're all good sparrows.

Pippin tax [and Baja cameo]

Today's message from Pippin: [Kissing noises]

___

1) Are you on the run to a safe place and passing through Arizona on your way to safer grounds? My apartment is open to you to crash at, and it is a safe space. Pippin and I will make you a meal and gladly share tea, wine, or mead with you.

2) Hey! Take your meds with a full glass of water, please. Do it for Pippin, or Space Mom, or better yet, do it for yourself.

3) Ĝefeloað wē. We will carry on.

4) all funds from the sales of items at these two links will be sent to support charities aiding to fight for Trans rights in the US (not just T-shirts!)

#41 Earthsea. Wisdom in magic, but the 'school kids' are a bunch of immature, classist douchebags, and a schoolboy's stupid ego-affirming dare nearly spends the end for the rest of the book for the main character.

#45 What about a basic silver coin, and when you get enough of them they weigh a certain amount. Call it a "silver-weight"?

Wot? You mean like a pound, mate?

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Too heavy. Divide it up with some marks.

#14 A Mammoth would probably just ignore people unless they were actively getting attacked and thus easy to ambush

Cobra Chickens are filled with pure spite and will attack you for no reason at all

Reminder that geese have easily grabbable necks and no one is stopping you from just grabbing and yeeting them.

#6 no... we only just got to the months without cold rain (pnw here). We finally emerged from under a blanket of depression that only allows a hollow diffused light through at best to a short window where I can wear a tank top without shivering. You just wait for your PSL.... oh you said "patiently"... look I've been going through a lot

#45 screw that, we're just using leaves.

#41 I will always recommend Naomi Novik. Actual character development, consistent world building, pithy commentary!

#45 Thelisan, a setting I've been working on, uses coins of copper (mostly irrelevant to travelers and often just tracked in a ledger instead of in coin), melchior (a nickel-copper alloy), and electrum. Common parlance has simplified the names of the latter two to melks and lecters. I think it works well enough.

#28 what is the name of the dinosaur and the name of the documentary? I never understand why people don't include those simple facts in their post =(

Mononykus, prehistoric planet

#11 and this is why I re-read books and re-watch movies. Isn’t that why we all love returning to our fandoms and have trouble accepting the new spin offs of them?

#1 I WANT CAT-SHAPED BREAD WHERE CAN I GET THIS????

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

#7 Well, I've had a lot of practice. I'd love to not get more.

#45 I’m literally just going to steal £ from Britain, give the MC pence, schillings, and pounds, and then another character can handle money because fuck tracking that.

#31 Why would it be blurred if the telescope was advanced *enough*? Anyway, here's our best effort at something 66m ly away (NGC3972 from the Hubble)

1 month ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Man, look at all those crazy dinosaurs!

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's an entire galaxy, though. I don't know about the blur but, resolving a dinosaur sized object from 66 million lightyears away would require a telescope with an aperature of roughly 20 light years.

I remember seeing a thing about this. If you shoot sensors in a black hole and have a sequence of them looking at a regular direction, you can use gravitational lensing to image the surface of a planet light years away.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh, I quite agree that the word "enough" in the original was doing a LOT of heavy lifting...

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

#1 I'd get that bread

#41 She ripped a lot off from The Worst Witch. Boarding school for spellcasters, broomstick athletic competition, wealthy snobby rival, strict potions teacher... lots of similarities. But her movie didn't have a musical number by Tim Curry about Halloween, though his title Grand Wizard has a different connotation in the US

#6 except for the septem-one that's too hot.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#41 Pratchett aside, I'd keep looking for better examples. Patrick Rothfuss's series is good, but unfinished, seemingly forever. Robert Jordan's wheel of Time is dripping with a metric fuckton of shitty gender stuff. And the Harry Dresden series has got some weird sexist/gender issues going on. This isn't to say these authors or books are bad like Rowling, but they are not unproblematic in their own ways. There is much more Potter-esque fantasy out there, some of it pre-dating Potter.

Books of Magic- Tim Hunter is a poor kid who finds out he had a magical destiny- he’s a scrawny brown haired kid with glasses. The comic came out years before Harry Potter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Books_of_Magic?wprov=sfti1

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, though if we're trying to avoid problematic authors, unfortunately I wouldn't go with Neil Gaiman

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oof. Ok good point.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just look at a map of Tar Valon from Jordan's Wheel of Time. That man had issues.

Right next to the big throbbing mountain created by the previous Dragon, Lews Therin.

And all of those books are for adults, which, good if you're an adult who wants to read about adults, but Harry Potter is a kids series. For kids. There are newer, better ones for kids, but I'd recommend Diane Duane's If You Want To Be a Wizard series. They're about ordinary kids who enter a magical world and learn how to use magic.

1 month ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I commented this below, but she ripped off the Worst Witch a lot. That was a 70s kids book series

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, right, I tend to forget those.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, and saying Robert Jordan's school is "complete with corporal punishment" is definitely smoothing over the fact that said corporal punishment is spanking.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

With instruments. It’s demeaning, very much not ok, and traumatizing. I hate how wheel of time normalizes violence and punishment. Otherwise, stellar series. Loved reading them.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh god, I forgot about the spanking
