Killer Timing

I've been at this place for over two years, doing work miles above my position. My boss and his boss both agreed that I deserved a hell of a lot more than what I was getting, and we've been discussing how to make it happen. Three days later, the company announces major personnel cuts. We run a very lean team, so we figured we were all safe, but we were proved wrong there. I was the only one cut.

While I'm happy to cut and run come the end of January, the circumstances hurt.
(To note: I don't believe I'm being laid off because I asked for a raise. I'm just a creature of bad timing)

Creature of bad timing

And this is why I never do more than what is required of me at work. Work smarter, not harder

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing someone decided you were too much money to keep around.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From what I've heard, job-hopping is the fastest way to get a raise. Get referrals and use your contacts!

"... doing work miles above my position" So many people think that's gonna help them in their career. :/

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Id blame the boss. Moneys gotta cone fron somewere. You get canned he gets $ and the company saves $

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya know... For how great the economy is... I've been hearing this story a lot.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well, at least you're getting laid. What does 'off' mean?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you’re doing work miles above your pay grade and they laid you off once you asked for a raise, it shows they were just abusing you.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, it's probably for the best. If you're not getting paid fairly for the work you do, you'd be better off elsewhere.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just remember, when they call you back because everything is falling apart, $300/hour, 4 hours minimum paid up front.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I see a lot of people get bent out of shape over this sort of thing. Why do you seem so calm?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No @OP. Companies just don't cut for no reason. The #1 reason is always costs and that is mostly the company's fault. You may have been cut

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because there wasn't any money to provide for the increase they were trying to set you up. & that your worth was too high of a price to pay.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never said there was no reason. The company is cutting 10% of the US employees, myself being one of them, because of dropping profits

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well as long as you believe...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean if you did such a splendid job, you should be getting really good recommendations from your boss and boss-of-boss.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am getting recommendations

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You were laid off because you asked for a raise.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't make the mistake of thinking it's not personal. Don't make the mistake of thinking you did something wrong.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not bad timing. The higher ups just don't want to pay you what you're owed. They'd rather swindle someone new who won't have (1/2)

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

the stones to ask for more money.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

they aren't refilling my position. All of my duties are being integrated into the team I was in

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Which means even more savings on their part since they can just force your coworkers to do what you did instead without paying them more.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Which is what my company is doing now. We got triple the work when a few left. Looking for a new job now.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was about to inherit the work from a coworker that left, which would've tripled my work load. I don't have to worry about that any more.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come to Canada, we’re running out of workers

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well guess you'll be spending some more time here on imgur

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Victim not creature

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

I’ve been laid off twice. While it hurt at the time hindsight has shown me that layoffs are always a numbers game, not personal. (1/2)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ie they lay off a percentage of staff and each team has to do that with little to no regard for personal performance or impact. (2/2)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This could be the path that gives you the raise you were asking for. Good luck.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are such a fucking sucker. You're getting screwed with your pants on, and thanking them for it.

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I'm definitely a sucker getting fucked, but I don't know how I'm thanking them for it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Brutal. Accurate. But brutal. Which might be needed by op. Higher ups always know. Hell, they probably knew while “prepping” his raise plan.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This literally just happened to me as well, just before Christmas. Same talk of a raise, and deserving more. "Want us to feel like a family"

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Things must be really tough to let you go given your level of performance.

6 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 1

Or they just want more profits.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

A lot of the decision makers have no idea the value of an individual employee. When it comes to restructuring, we're all just ID numbers.

6 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

This might just be the cynic talking, but throw on top that they might have been making noise...

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had seen the ppl being defended from being laid off. It all depends on your project, your boss and company's direction of savings

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I think I get what they are doing. Get a new guy like you and scam them to overwork. When they realise it then scam a new one.

6 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 1

They're eliminating my position entirely

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

Ya they did that to me once, eliminated the chief engineer and replaced with a construction manager...was cheaper

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How was it that your boss and your bosses boss had no awareness that a role in their team was being removed? Not normally how it works.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Yep. I’m confused by this post too. Not saying it’s fake or partially fake. Just doesn’t make much sense from a business standpoint.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The decisions were made by our senior VPs and up. They made the calls. I don't know what they used to make these decisions

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Especially in some startups, this can be a regular cycle where they create then permaclose a role. Hang in there man. I've been laid off 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And it's tough. File for unemployment, grab samples of your work and get the recommends mentioned. Q1 is a good time to find jobs. Good luck

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So all the work you were doing doesn’t require a position dedicated to it?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're taking away the dedicated position, so my work is being integrated into the team I'm working in

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and in a month or two, they'll hire someone for a new position, titled "totally not your position."

6 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

They usually make it about a year before reviving my position, assuming they don't cut the team down even more

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it'll be different in that it will have EVEN MORE additional responsibilities they won't tell the new guy about before getting the job

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Nope, this was a direct response to you asking for a raise, especially since you were the only one in the department that got cut. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

If they really wanted to save money they would have cut one or two of the lower performers.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

My entire position is being removed because they deemed (based on my job description, not my actual work) that it was unnecessary.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

So basically a lack of communication between your bosses resulted in you getting fired. Incompetence all the way up it seems.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have to agree. They didn't just see the money could save now, they saw the money they would save in the future.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Problem is you can't prove it, so you have no legal recourse.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Even if they could prove it, if they're in the US, they'd have no legal recourse; you can hella be terminated for asking for more money.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In some states you can’t be

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get letters of recommendation from your bosses to help get you into the position they were Grooming you for, not the one you left.

6 years ago | Likes 1053 Dislikes 2

Ugh... "Grooming" in response to humans has a really bad connotation for me thanks to pedophiles.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True this, my supervisor at the school I used to clean for has always given me an amazing review no matter the amount of times he gets

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Called by companies verifying the recommendation. (Which is a lot if you can't tell)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

as someone who hires, letters of recommendations are a little weird past a certain age. just have them ready as references.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Already on that. They still want to see me succeed, even if it's not in this company

6 years ago | Likes 317 Dislikes 0

Nice bosses are rare and wonderful things, glad you have them

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sound like GCs to me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They sound nice. Write them a nice reference on LinkedIn or something like that. They may end up following you.

6 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 0

Your bosses sound rather nice. Hopefully things work out for you my friend.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is most heartening to read, and noticeably rare nowadays.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Good people.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If they wanted you to succeed they wouldn't have fired you. Now go be a threat to someone else's position.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 9

I'm not fired. 10% of our US employees were laid off. I was one of them

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sometimes HR or Upper Mgmt gives names not “you choose”. If a raise was discussed doubt it’s coincidence.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Sounds like that place is about to lose a valuable member. It'll be bittersweet when they're failing without you @OP

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's how I've been trying to see it.
