Chinstrap penguins have a dilemma. They require more than 11 hours of sleep a day but also have to remain constantly vigilant while hatching their solitary egg. A careless penguin will lose their egg to predatory skua birds and will even have their nesting materials stolen by other unscrupulous penguins. A nesting pair take turns minding the egg while their partner heads off (sometimes for several days) to forage for food and probably a quick pint at a local hostelry.
These penguins have adapted by taking around 10000 micronaps a day, averaging out at 4 seconds per nap. Researchers determined that this shows that unlike humans, some species can accrue the benefits of sleep incrementally. Humans become cognitively impaired if their sleep is disrupted too frequently. Humans do like a little nap though!
Chinstrap penguins get their name from the thin black band of plumage extending from ear to ear. There are approximately 8 million breeding pairs in the Antarctic peninsula and South Atlantic Ocean Islands.
