I loved Monkey Island on Amiga 1200, I still have the 7 floppy discs somewhere. I worked on rig supply ships and lugged the Amiga and a 14"Sony Trinitron to the ship to play on my time off. The only issue was first playthrough I had no access to help at all and it took me far too long to figure out some puzzles like getting the Head of the Navigator.

I think the one and only way of dying was drowing. But you'd have to hang around for like 10m before it actually happened. You *actively* had to want to die for it to happen. Best damn game ever!

One of the big reasons I preferred LucasArts games was that I knew you couldn't "fail." The ability to try out anything without having to worry about saving constantly for fear or losing progress due to some arbitrary kill-switch was a notably less stressful experience. This scene is a perfect encapsulation of that :)

Sierra in turn did a joke on this. In one of the Space quest adventures, i think it was SQ5, you walked into a dark cave with a big green tree in the center: "Hmm, I wonder what kind of tree would grow in here..." Upon closer inspection: "a rubber tree".

Yes, but also one of the great gameplay decisions LucasArts made: the point of an adventure game is adventure. Dying makes players too cautious to enjoy the adventure.

Ted Elliot was supposedly involved in the MI movie, before it was cancelled. He later wrote the script for Pirates of the Caribbean and all the sequels. POTC is inspired by the POTC ride from Disneyland, but if you squint you can see the MI influence. Will and Jack are both kinda Guybrush, Elizabeth is Elaine, Barbossa is LeChuck.

I think a monkey island movie *could* be absolutely brilliant... but the humour wouldn't be very well received in this age, and maybe more importantly, you'd need to get your hands on a very young Tim Curry for the role of Guybrush. And possibly a very old Tim Curry for LeChuck, too...

At the time there was a local hobby computer club in my town, with mostly Amiga and Atari ST owners. The ST guys always showed off music stuff they did on their pc's. One had made a song about Secret of Monkey Island to the tune of Tina Turner's Nutbush song, so itstead of "Nutbush city limits" it went "Guybrush Treep-wood.."

One of the first graphical games I played was LucasFilms 'LOOM'. I had to upgrade the RAM on my Tandy system from 512KB to 640KB so it could run. At one point I needed game help, long before internet game sites and browsers, although CompuServe did exist, but I called a 1 800 number for a tip and an actual human answered the call and helped solve the puzzle. Like you would get that treatment anywhere today. Sierra, Leisure Suite Larry, Spellcasting 101, Zork, etc. were all fun.

I might be a little extra bitter, because I actually preordered EfMI. Only time I've EVER done that with a game, or paid full brand-new-retail price. $60 was a huge amount of money to 16-year-old me, but I loved the Monkey Island games. Then to find the shitty 3D modeling in place of the old, beautiful art of CoMI, the console-style controls, and the fact that it had to pause for 10 seconds in between every game action even though my system met the minimum requirements... it was painful.
