The real answer (pushes up glasses): Many animals have evolved color patterns with dark colors on top and light (white) on the bottom so that when the sun shines from above, it brightens the dark top and the shadow on their bottom side (belly) darkens the light side. This creates an optical illusion that evens out their overall brightness, causing them to camouflage into the background better, which has been naturally selected to take advantage of. The dark top also helps resist UV rays.

He is named after my favorite childhood cat, who was named Cat. She was also a tuxedo. I rescued here when I was 16. Unfortunately, she was tragically lost during a family move when she squeezed out of a slightly open window while at a rest stop.
