he has it wrong. the default speed is 80km. and only on some super highway stretches will they have marking showing it goes up to 100 or more. If you haven't seen a sign in a while, you assume it's 80kmh.

If he wanted to be "technically correct" it's often 110 and 80, which carries the same fines, so... Easy fix.

Honestly it's never "whoopsie now it's 70" on the highways, it's *very* well littered with signs. As per usual comedians do tend to hyperbole things a little bit, but it's funny, that's for certain. You make a LOT of money if you get that sort of fine!

I've not been in Norway, but at least in Finland those signs are very easy to miss, if you are "too familiar with the road" and they change the speedlimits. "This was 80km/h place" thinks driver, and assumes that's what the brand new 60km/h sign says still." Usually after these sports there's also at least place for camera to catch anyone unawares.

And then there's those always fun limit changes under a every steep hill where you pretty much have to stand on the brake to make the car slow down in time. Especially when they have a camera just after the limit change. My local road has a spot like that. It is funny to look at the sky in winter because you get multiple flashes during busy days. It is like lightning.

I don't know, man. I got a ticket in France from a speed camera. The whole place was 70, 90, 110, etc and I was driving into Suisse Normande in the evening and a tree flashed lights at me. Now I hadn't seen a speed limit sign for miles, but the last one I saw was 90. So I was doing 95kph to play it safe. Turns out that one section was 80kph for no reason. When I went back to my hotel, I looked for any speed limit signs and still never found one that said 80.

In America, there are also lots of signs... usually. There are spots, every so often, where they probably should have another sign, or a tree grew in the way, or whatever. And the cops know these places, and watch them. To meet their quotas. Or else the town can’t pay for itself. Because they rely on that money to operate because we don’t have a functioning society.

Ehh, my mother got a 8000 NOK fine for missing a sign and going 79 in a 60 somewhere between Oslo and Kristiansand just a few weeks ago. She's also, according to her, 65 years old and senile. I can confirm the age, but I think the latter claim is at the very least exaggerated.

Norway has fixed fines. In Finland, fines are based on income. Denmark is somewhere in between.

That's not true. A speedingticket is proportionate to your income. We don't have fixed fines for speeding, but we do have a points system where you eventually lose your license, and if you drive too fast we take your license AND your car gets impounded.

Interesting. That means they've updated that quite a bit since I was about 20. Mea culpa I had no idea they'd gone full rigidity, but I do recall the cops being nice about a paymentplan due to *insufficient income* so maybe I'm confusing it with that. Neato!

We don't have fines based on income in Denmark, but a new-ish law means that the police will confiscate the vehicle for certain offenses. One of the funny ones is going more than 100% above the limit regardless of what that limit is. Driving with a BAC level above a certain threshold is another one.

In the USA, that's illegal. If you want to accept federal funds for your road maintenance, you must abide by federal laws. Towns are not allowed to jump suddenly from a highway speed to secondary road speed. It must be progressively reduced.

1/2 These kinds of speed change (in km/h, not mph) are rather common here in Germany. Outside of Towns, there is a general speed limit of 100 kph (km/h). When you get to crossroads, there often is a speed limit of 70 kph, beginning a bit before the crossroads and ending directly after it.
There are crossroads with and without traffic lights - the latter being more common for T crossings.
In certain areas, the speed goes down from 100 directly to 50.
This can be the beginning of a town...

The direct drop from 100 to 50 kph can also be a dangerous incline, or roadworks (or at an entrance to a construction site with restricted view.

The speed is more than likely in km/hr given that the country is Norway. Doing the conversion that’s dropping from about 65mph to 45mph (roughly). I know several roads that do this. It’s not as big of a drop as you may be thinking. And the whole “drops immediately” is also likely bs. What is true is the high fine associated with speeding and the enforcement of said limits.
