Words mean different things depending on context.
Like for instance "mate" is an insult more often than a term of endearment, but we also know how to target language based on who we are speaking to.
An American calling us "mate" is unlikely to be an insult, but we know damn well Americans don't like being called cunts (generally, as a whole you aren't big swearers)
