i really do not understand our knowledge of the ocean, sometimes we have the whole thing generally mapped but not in detail, sometimes we only have the united states waters mapped in detail and 5% of the rest, or we have 5% total but i heard that number was misleading and outdated, ive even looked at the noaa topographical map and current scans which makes it seem like we can only map tiny strips at a time

TBH, most of us don't know the height of any mountains, save something that is geographically close to us. So no matter what mountain they picked, the vast majority will have to look it up. And most likely, the actual article will have the measurement. As far as using banana, at average 7.5 inches, 3km is approx 14k bananas. I can't even fathom that quantity.

Did the research. This discovery references Mount Olympus of Greece, 2917 meters. New mountain (not sure it has a name) is 3,109-meters. It is not taller than the 22km volcano Mount Olympus on Mars the size of France.

The one on Mars is, to the best of my recollection, uniformly referred to as Olympus Mons, even in English language sources. So when they said "Mount Olympus" I immediately assumed it was the one in Greece where their ancient mythology placed their pantheon.
