Berlin officials are speculating that freezing temperatures caused a crack which eventually failed. No word on why it would be so cold in the hotel's lobby.
The 46ft tall aquarium held more than 264 thousand gallons of water and was home to about 1500 exotic fish.
[That's 14 meters and 1 million liters. No change in the number of fish.]
Sadly, none of the fish could be saved. But efforts are underway to relocate the fish housed in smaller aquariums in the hotel's basement as they are now without power due to the severe damage caused by the water.
More than 350 guests were staying at the hotel at the time. Only two sustained minor injuries and the remainder are being moved to other hotels.

On the question about the cold temperatur in the lobby. Because of the high heating costs this year, there is a regulation of 19°C max.

Maybe they even set the room temperatur even lower at night since the tank broke at around 5am I think.

Would think anything changing gradually wouldn't be a problem. If it was a quick change, I would think it might cause an issue

Even if not, that mass of water would practically never freeze.

That might have actually made it worse. Warm water on one side, cold air on the other. Inside tries to expand while outside shrinks.

The glass would be the same temp as the water in that case. But it would take a bunch of energy to keep the water warm.

I would think. Especially because (from what I understand) most of the fish were tropical. It's weird no articles mention it.

Maybe it's about the difference in temperature from water to outside that caused the glass to shatter.

Oh, that might do it. @RoxaDragonheart just posted that there's a maximum 19°C/66°F heat ordinance in place atm. And the fish are tropical
