The original book, she said, was taken from all different cultures "everything had happened somewhere" just not all the pieces in one setting. The actual concept of handmaids (where the book/series gets its name) is direct from the old testament and the characters literally quote those bible verses directly before raping people to justify their actions. It's very very very literally Christian.
