I've been really depressed for a very long time, I live in a country where depression isn't considered a "thing", no support from parents, they actually make it worse both along with my brother keep on telling me how I won't amount to anything, how I'm useless and a failure, tried to run away a couple of times but they always find me, my friends, as few as they are, were the only reason I chose to stick around, lately it's got worse to the point that I stayed a whole week on my back in bed staring at the ceiling and doing nothing else, lost a lot of weight, I'm too proud to ask for help also I don't like being the centre of attention, most of my life I've had to do things on my own, I got no help, I just man up and do it and that kind of mentality makes it hard for me to ask for help, crying used to help but parents always told me men don't cry, my tear ducts are virtually dry, I rarely ever cry, there's no outlet, nothing I can do, no one I can talk to, I know lots of people have it worse, and that's why it took me so long to actually admit it and even talk about it, I'm not looking for attention, I swear. I just wish if someone was going through the same experience would share some gems of wisdom, I just want to feel light again not like I'm carrying the weight of the world in my chest.

We don't have GPs that really deal with mental disorders

If you have the option to speak to a close friend or a therapist, someone you can fully open up to, it can do wonders. Meds help to if need

Not being able to cry is kind of a thing as you enter manhood. It will come back. Talk to your doctor, and they’ll know what to do.

So that's normal? The more you know..will try to see one. We don't have psychiatrists here, I mean they all work in this mental institution>

You are either mad so admitted or not so roam free

First off, manning up doesn't mean ignoring your health. You're a human being. You're allowed to express how you feel. Also, it's super 1/2

Important you keep chugging. Keep bathing, working, whatever. Dwelling won't help you. Little victories go a long way
ICanUsername
I appreciate your words but I'm at this point where little victories are outweighed so don't seem so significant

I hear you. It's hard to recognize the significance of brushing your teeth when you feel crushed by the world. But those little tasks

build momentum. Right now, your depression has a TON of momentum being propelled by those that don't understand it. You gotta push back

I have been battling with depression for about 10 years. I reached out 2 weeks ago. Verbalizing my issues is a huge load of your back.
ICanUsername
I can't get myself to do that, I was just raised to think complaining is pathetic and even though I don't mind hearing others>

I'm actually happy to listen and help but I can't get myself to talk to someone.. I can't call for help so I wanted to help myself just how?
ificouldwritesomethingcleveriwould
I understand. I grew up thinking that emotions were something that you had to store deep down. What actually drove me to speak about (1/?).

It was actually seeing my father get help for depression, which was basically unfathomable for me before. I spoke with my SO about it (2/?)
ificouldwritesomethingcleveriwould
For the first time in 5 years (I’ve been very good at hiding my feelings), and decided to actively seek help. Last couple of years (3/?)

Have been worse, with recurring thoughts about suicide. I can honestly tell you that I feel like it finally can imagine things being better.

I have struggled with most of my life as well. For people who don't actually experience it, it's not possible to really understand it >
henryv1598
Hell, those of us who deal with it don't always understand it either. It just is. And it's crippling. I know how crippling it is. >

You may not have any religious beliefs, but if depression is essentially taboo in your country, you may reach out to members of the clergy >

who are frequently much more sensitive and open to such things, and helping people through it. Many ministers of various faiths have >

experience in counseling and helping people through times of immense difficulty. If you can't get help from mental health practitioners >

you may find help there. Good luck. You're not alone.
