Moon Halo

The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.

I was struggling to come up with gifts to congratulate my sister and my brother-in-law on their new baby boy. I decided to go out and take some pictures of the night sky and give them a canvas print of the night sky on the birth date of their newborn.

The scene was surreal as a moon halo appeared above me, which presented itself as a floating orb held softly by the clouds.
