I have been searching for a way to escape my maddeningly toxic job for about a year. After 3 ghosting and 3 non-negotiable low ball offers I gave up hopes of moving out of red state and on a whim applied to the local university for a teaching position. I was well overqualified for the position so I knew I would get it. They also refused to negotiate on salary so I'm stuck with several terrible choices, Stay and keep looking in an ever worsening job market, quit and take the pay cut, or
After talking with my partner we have decided that i will do both jobs for a year. Doing so will mean that we will own our house outright in a single year at which point I can then afford to quit the job I hate.
cat tax. he died on Christmas eve last year I miss the single brain celled big guy every day
xurs
So... You will own your house in a red state?

Take bribes from students to make up the difference? Teach the large 100 level lectures and make bank! That’s what I saw everywhere when I was in China lol. Teachers all grifted.

Adjunct life: juggling degrees, debt, and desperation while moonlighting as a part-time professor and full-time dream crusher. Academic hunger games, anyone?
doctorId
I'm in the same position, but doing therapy. Working a low level position til I'm fully qualified and I have to keep working my shitty old job to make ends meet.
yesyoucancancan
Hth can you do two jobs at once?

Im sorry. I dont understand how "I will kill myself slowly" was even an option here.
MagicalHamFlaps
welcome to the education field where you are expected to be perfect for less pay than you could make working part time at wal-mart

Unless you have a predatory interest rate, don't go pouring money into your mortgage. A simple money market account returns between 4 and 6% right now
spookyactionatadistance
Until January my combined money market investment were netting me 15%. That's the low risk part of my RRSP and it made me over 10k in 1 year. It's around 8% ytd now. Still. The magic number is 7%. At 7% a fixed investment doubles every decade. I started understanding the power of compound interest too late in life.

There was a guy where I worked (uni) who in addition to his professorship was also a funeral director (IIRC).

Here in Taiwan you cannot legally hold other jobs if you are a full time teacher in a school. The reason being they feel that you will compromise on the effort put in on teaching, or create conflict of interest. I think it's stupid, and many professors do it through other means anyways.

Oh, he got fired by the uni (actually state of MN) once it fully came to light that he had another full time gig, but he got away with it for years before that. He was also reportedly never available to meet for office hours (10 hours per week contractually required). My state's stance is "interesting" in that it would have been fine if I met clients (mental health) in my office and charged them for counseling sessions.

the pay over here is not enough to support even a single person even if the position was full time. the uni will dangle the full time tenure track position in front of me like a carrot. IDK I'm in a weird place financially where we make enough to live paycheck to paycheck but not enough to thrive. I am using this opportunity to eliminate mortgage debt and hopefully remove fixed costs. this will increase future opportunity to be able to take a job i like more without sacrificing QOL

I made pretty good $$$, especially so in the final years as I was way up in the pay scale (full prof with a couple of decades of service), but it would not have been enough if I lived in a high cost, urban setting. I do remember early years feeling like I was not getting paid enough for what I was doing (less than half of what I made at the end). Ironically I was working waaaay harder in the early years trying to earn promotion and tenure.

Personally I adjunct + consulting work + trying to establish another career path. I need to establish multiple income sources and I get by ok, relatively speaking, and to balance between what I want to do vs what I need to do.
AyatollahBahloni
Associate is better than adjunct. Those poor bastards are treated like serfs.
louster
I had literally no idea about any of this until I watched this video by Angela Collier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AvfOhtmCZY

That's one hell of an exposé. (I mean, we've known about this for a long time, but she did a great presentation on it.
aThingWithTheStufAndTheJunk
Had a friend who was an adjunct, she only had to teach two classes a day...
In two cities 4 hours away from each other.

/waves_from_former_adjunct_land . Yeah, most semesters I was making less than rent+student loan payments. I did like teaching though...

Sure but you get more money if they’re covered in peanut butter, whipped cream or chocolate so choose wisely.

Red is rad, blue is bad

this being the first time i ever posted one of these i did not know. i thought it was a matrix situation where the blue pill was rosy wonderland but covering over the terrible red pill reality

How is it that ever single one of these that makes front page is wrong. I can't figure it out.
EpsteinsWeenieHutJuniors
Its all AI, none of its real. Its just hitting a score. Generic meme generator API, generic gif, cat tax
HashMaster9k
There was one yesterday that made the front page that was filled with them— all PROPERLY color coded.

Of course I missed it! Maybe I just have seriously bad luck catching the correct ones
