Let them have the back of the hand. Not the head.

No, thinking is a sufficient condition not a necessary one.

They don't so much as exist, as take up space and pollute the air you breathe.

"I think. I think. I can't stop thinking. Jesus Christ, someone, please help! Make the thoughts stop!"

Thinking is my Superpower. Of course, it's also my Kryptonite.

A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says "You come here a lot. You sure you're not an alcoholic?". The horse ponders it a bit, and says "I don't think I am," and promptly vanishes from existence.

Now all the philosophy majors might get this immediately because it plays on Descartes' maxim of "I think, therefore I am", but if I explained this beforehand it would be putting Descartes before the horse.

Eh. All thinking things exist, but not all things that exist think. There is no contradiction or quandary here.

You know, when people talk about "these trying times", l always get suspicious what the hell they are up to, what are these fuckers trying??? These fuckin' times???

Thinking is the most basic proof you exist. You can't prove or disprove anyone else exists at such a fundamental level, whether or not they appear to think.

. . . And yet idiots exist. Problem with cartesian thought is if you start with your own head as the only objective measure, you'll never get out. Descartes got so far up his own, he couldn't see the sun. As the meme saith, "hypocrite that you are, for you trust the chemicals in your brain to tell you they are chemicals. All knowledge is ultimately based on that which we cannot prove. Will you stand and fight? Or die like a dog?"

Lesser known: Descartes uses this line of reasoning to go on and 'prove' the existence of God. So, y'know, it's a mixed bag.

According to my old philosophy professor Descarte's fellow philosophers also quickly pointed out that the existence of thoughts hardly proved with absolute certainty that some specific thinking entity existed. Which in turn showed just how much of an intellectual dead end the "great doubt" approach to philosophy is.

At least based on "I think, therefore I am."

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Well I'm not entirely convinced that I actually exist, so I'll just stick to "I think I think, therefore I might possibly be."

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I think therefore I am, does that mean you think therefore you am too?
