I started watching during the Baker era. My youngest was especially excited to start watching the new series with me. It became a Saturday morning ritual, the kids would climb into bed with us and we'd watch. It helped that we were behind so we could watch a lot without breaks. They were crushed by the first regeneration. My youngest became such a fan that he had a Doctor Who themed Bar Mitzvah.

The current doctors stories are just shit to me. Baby space station. The toymakers drag queen kid who destroyed all of humanity by taking away music? It's just bad and not in the good bad way.

I hate liking things and then seeing online how everyone else who says they like the same things I do actually HATES the newest edition of the thing and I should be embarrassed for liking this one particular instance of the thing.

Same! I always wonder why they even watch it if they hate it. DW has a never-ending built-in cycle of this phenomena. Personally, I always find regeneration bittersweet, but I haven't seen a Doctor yet that I dislike!

Same with all fandoms, really. You like something until it changes too much for you, and then you either complain about it loudly, or you just... step away.
Baker was my Doctor, from all the way back when in was a kid in the '80s, and as such, that sort of set my personal barometer for what "Doctor Who" should be. Over the last 40 years, I've faded in an out of the fandom depending on whether or not I liked what I was seeing.
We'll have to see what happens with this new season, I suppose.

I think we've all got "our" Doctor that we judge all others by. Mine is Tennant, but I like all of them, really. I did have to step away halfway through Eleven's era bc the plot and timelines got too convoluted for me to follow. I tried 3 times before I decided I'd just never get it.
