0) Start with a 3x3 grid subdivided into smaller 3x3 grids. 1) Draw straight guide lines as shown. It's all rotationally symmetric at 90deg.

5) This implies the corners have a knot where the outer tube crosses itself twice. 6) Vertical and horiz tubes cross centre like a strudel!

Most of the algorithm is in the top level comments. It's not computer code, but you could figure that out from the essentials given.
