It’s a post-post-apocalyptic weird sci fi story that I’ve been working on for a long time. Had a great talk about it with an agent about a year ago while I was rewriting it. Submitted it and heard back almost immediately (a few days later) with a form rejection. Okay.
It’s not actually very interesting. Should be half the length it is. Tells a story but doesn’t, like *tell a story.* Probably should’ve thought of that earlier in the process.
I’ve learned a lot about my world, which is a lot of fun. And every time I try to start writing, I find something else I need to figure out. Not discouraging so much as frustrating.
This is all spread over the past 6 months (since October or so). The world is exhausting. There’s so much stupid. So in late January I got with a friend and brainstormed a stupid and fun story about someone who decides to do something about it.
It’s about an orca. A billionaire kills her pod and leaves her for dead. So she decides to get revenge. Think Kung Fury meets what you wanted Cocaine Bear to be, and also a lot of bad puns. No self-respecting agent would consider this.
It’s done. Its dumb. It’s fun. Why not, at this point?
My artistic abilities are rather limited so I went with simple, loud, and dumb, just like the rest of the book.
Yay!

whale, good luck! I bet it's a killer story!
tavinjer
I mean there is QUITE a lot of killing involved so I hope so!

What’s an OROD?
I’m kidding, but you might wanna un-stylize the font just a *little* bit.
tavinjer
Good call, may need to adjust that kerning. I do find it absolutely necessary to have a slasher font, though.

Actually reading the work I wrote has been the hardest part for me. I feel like it's never good enough, but only after the fact, and no matter how many drafts I write.
I also went self publishing, because agents are so inundated with submissions and they're looking for award winners with an established/easily built audience.
Good luck, fellow writer 🫡

Yeah reading your own stuff is like listening to a recording of your voice or watching a video of yourself, just absolutely humiliating. Takes a while to get used to it and figure out what you like so you can augment that. A looooong while. Keep up the writing!

Quite a ride.

You wrote stuff yourself AND you even made hand done art for the cover. Great job. Accolade for you
tavinjer
Hey thanks! It was fun! (Which coincidentally is also how I was able to finish it)

World building should always only be an addition to the story and their full or partial reveal can be their own arch, in small parts.
tavinjer
I like to write stories that emerge from the world they exist in, so in order to do that I have to know and understand that world. Once I know the story I’m trying to tell, I can include the necessary “worldbuilt” elements. But yeah, most of the worldbuilding doesn’t make it into the story as such.

Most readers are people who just need a few hints to build their own visual world for the story. Not a writer since my childhood but an excessive reader.

Write stupid books, win stupid prizes. Good luck

Learning and improving, fuck yeah.

Well don't give up too soon. And do as I say, not as I do. As I look at the electronic dust settling on my 3-year-old half finish novel.
tavinjer
Yeah I have several of those too

Y'all I'm so glad you're publishing it yourself! Who knows? Maybe you'll make Chuck Tingle bank! Either way, favoriting so I can get this later. It sounds awesome!
tavinjer
Oh hey thanks! Chuck Tingle is a big inspiration, as was Melania Devourer of Man. Here’s a preview of the carnage if you want to check it out: https://theinterstice.substack.com/p/preview-teenage-orca-rampage

OK, i looked at it. First things - before entering the right state of mind - I tought were, well, negative. Then I found this gem: ' “I should have a one-liner for this,” she says to herself, making a mental note to ask the writer about that later.' where the fourth wall and my mind went broken at the same time :-D :-D :-D
tavinjer
lol, that’s fair! In the full thing, the idiocy starts a lot faster, so I might lean into that. I appreciate the feedback!
