Someone should have booped the snoot.
They go into a type of hibernation and poke their snouts out before the water freezes over. Pretty efficent.

Fun fact: the density of water peaks at 4C. In deeper lakes that freeze on top there's usually a liquid 4C water pool on the bottom.
