Los Angeles used to have one of the largest mass transit systems in the world. Street cars were prolific across the city until GM and age lead to their demise. This is the current Subway/Light rail map of Los Angeles. We have a long way to go, but there is currently a lot under construction, including the streetcar revival. It's not quite as impressive as London or NYC, but most people don't even realize it exists.By the end of 2015 you will be able to ride the subway from North Hollywood to Santa Monica. That's HUGE!

It's actually the city of Vernon, which is not serviced by the subway line, but it's S of the Pico Aliso Yellow Line station.
