Cost of data retention has gone way down and we take it for granted these days. Digitalization if days exponentially let us store more data. But we're gonna push that to the limit with hiw much new data is created each day. Trick is, like this guy, sifting out the gold from the rubbish. But each person has diff definition of what's gold and what's rubbish

One tape reel was somewhere around 10k, and preserving it would cost between 30-40k, and as a publicly funded station they couldn't justify saving a lot of performances that they wouldn't have rights to replay again without a new contract. So pretty much only stock footage was saved. A dumb decision from penny pinchers unfortunately in some cases.

It’s worth noting that before about 1970, recorded media wasn’t the norm.
Shows were expected to be live. Music was distributed on vinyl records to radio stations and played on-air. Broadcasts were ephemeral. Recording was really only done for record-keeping purposes… and why bother storing anything past that?
As technology and nostalgia advanced, demand for recording and preservation grew, but it was still a niche thing to care about until around the mid-1980s.

Yep, the BBC (other broadcasters too) were so ludicrously cost-conscious and utterly unaware of the potential future value of their recordings, they erased by some estimates 60-70% of their footage between the mid-'50s and mid-'70s. All just to be able to reuse the tape stock. So half of Dr. Who eps of the First and Second Doctors are gone forever, similarly 2 of 3 series of a cool Y.A. fantasy series called The Ace of Wands. Also Beatles on Top of the Pops. And way more. 🤯 😤 🤷🏻♂️

In the case of Don Kirshner Rock Concert show in the US which had incredible list of performances 230 episodes were preserved in good condition by the producer but were passed on to a Historic films company that charges such high licensing fees the public doesn't get to see them.

don't forget there were a lot of creatives who thought the ephemeral nature of performing arts is the key point of it - that you can't just redo it, it's only later did they realize the value in recording performances
