Indie game developers, knife makers, Etsy stores, Instagrammers, YouTubers, etc. seem to constitute an increasing percentage of the posts here, and it's annoying. None of us come here to look at advertising. Even if your content is interesting, please don't use it to advertise. We get enough of that bullshit from literally everywhere else.

If its interesting a link at bottom really isnt going to detract from the images or video. If I keep seeing the same person and it's not an item I want to see, I just block them. Not sure why people have such an aversion to just blocking people if they're not interested in their content. I block more of the "photo each day" posts, which I find far more annoying. With imgur as slow as it is these days though, it really doesn't take long to start blocking and stop seeing most of what annoys you.

Usually the comment just gets downvoted with replies like 'dont be so cynical', or 'I'm fine with independent artists using Imgur to advertise.'

You can either report posts as scams or fraud if you feel they're on the take, or mute users that post content that doesn't interest you so that you're never bothered by them again.

The girl with the wire jewelry makes me grind my teeth, among others. If the user also posts other things, comments on other posts, or favorites anything, I give it a pass. at least they’re a contributing member of our little society (like the guy that posts meme dumps and then leaves a link to his steam game). but when they ONLY post their things for sale, NEVER comment on any but their ad posts, and have no favorites, it means they’re just using us for free advertising and I hate it.

"don't know how"? At least the web loader explicitly tells you when you're going to make a post public. It's a choice, at that point.

I have a question, what if I post something I made, and I don't say anything about my company or where to find it. What if I just want to post because I like the thing I made? Is it considered advertising because I also sell the thing? Even if I never say anything about selling it?

It's perfectly fine, as long as you wait for someone to ask if you have a store. Then it is acceptable to post your information, or better yet, DM the person with that info. I've bought several items from other users that way.

Nah, needs more than that. Too many people claiming they made something to sell on Etsy, and wait for someone to ask for a link, and it turns out it's just a drop shipped product. Put a link in your bio or message privately.

That's my general practice, but I do see people complaining about ad posts and I definitely get it.

In my opinion it is all about community engagement. If you are an active participant in our community I am fine seeing if you are looking to hock something every once in a while. If ElbowDeepInAHorse posted up about selling novelty suppositories, totally cool as she contributed regularly in other ways. If someone only posts about their steam game, and doesn't actively participate with folks as human to human outside that context, I begin to see a promotion problem.
