Mataveri Airport, the most remote airport in the world. NASA paid for the 10,000 foot runway when it was thought it could be used for emergency space shuttle landings.

A Moai at Ahu Tahai

Ovahe beach is in the cove over to the left.

Sign says to not disturb the ancestral remains.

Ovahe beach the second of only two sand beaches on the island.

Tongariki from a distance.

Reconstructed Ahu at Tongariki

Walking through the quarry at Rano Raraku you see Moai all over the place.

A very unique Moai, this one is kneeling and looks much different than the others. It may have been made much later to symbolize a ritual singer.

Many of the Moai in the quarry appear to be abandoned mid work.

Probably the most iconic view of the Moai from Rano Raraku quarry.

Se stonework similar to Incan styles with the fitting together of the rocks at Vinapu

A small but vocal independence movement.

It’s not all tropical paradise. There is some contention between natives and the Chilean government.

My noble steed for the trip, the venerable Suzuki Jimny. That’s not a typo.

They even have a special stamp for your passport.

Lots of Moai for sale. I wanted the huge one in the middle but it was for display only.

A swimming pool constructed in the ocean.

Daily flights to the island are offered by LATAM using 787s.

So long!
