Frame it and board it over. The seams will be ugly and you'll never match the color, but you can just tack an outdoor carpet over it. Later on, when the deck needs to be replaced, you can put boards that cross over the hole and the hole will be a distant memory.
I was also thinking that, but more along the lines of Irori/Imori, a traditional Japanese sunken fire pit, used for cooking food on a grill or boiling tea water by suspending a kettle over it. This sort of brass accented iron fire pit powered by red hot charcoal would be far safer than those silly plastic tubs filled with warm water which pose a drowning risk to kids at all times. Good place to huddle around for some warmth, with barbecue and bourbon on chilly autumn evenings
Okay so we're putting in a ball python pit with hamster balls (of course with hamsters Starting out in them) all in this put.. Got it sounds like a plan.
That made me think of how Mr. Rogers had a covered sandbox that I really envied as a kid. Sand with no sticks or chunks in it! Not like the sand I saw at the playground
I've seen people putting sand boxes in popup tents and I'm really considering it when kiddo's older. You can zip it up when not in use to keep the local stays out.

hot tub full of mayonnaise.

Trampoline. Tall boarder of padding all around. Dog will love it.

That's where I'd store my rusty metal and broken glass
Zombieemperor
Why do you store such tasity snacks?
EmanNiemThcin
You could also store some fire in there, together with those items.

Just sell it to someone who wants to install a hot tub
psstuphere
Put an iron grid over it. A pen for your offspring

I love that everyone's ignoring the joke and giving serious answers!

It’s because they didn’t circle the joke in red

Hi, welcome to adulthood. We take decks very serious.

Make a small, cosy conversation pit, something akin to this, with a water-tight lid (for when you're not using it, obv'):
SueSueDio
That's just cushion storage - no room for people to sit! ;)
TuffyTDog
They're to cushion the falls, when people stumble into it at 2am
SueSueDio
That works too, I guess!
benderfreak
I guess calling it a conversation pit is the most controversial way to say it, love it!
StillAKidAtHeart
Looks like a good place for a hot tub.
PervertedTango
GSA1386
Agreed. Get a hot tub.
flyingnetherlander
I don’t know why you’d go to the effort of getting rid of it. I second this motion.
Minaris
If you are never going to use something, and someone else will pay you money for it, then why wouldn't you sell it?
flyingmonkeystick
I don’t disagree but if you’re going that route, you should probably at least plan further ahead about what you plan to do with the resultant hole.
Noahbalboa82
Have we considered a cold tub?
Gcap2014
Or a semi warm medium cold tub
reichstein
Just have to get rid of the baby.
NickRivieraMD
hot tub coulda taken care of that for them. Really messed up.
flyingmonkeystick
They’d get charged with negligence. You’re better off staging an accident instead. Perhaps let your local pit bull meet the baby.
NickRivieraMD
this got even darker than I intended

BadPunsAplenty
sunken funiture, a la the 1970's; a low table with pillows to sit on, as in Japan; in-floor storage bins; a pineapple under the sea.
GuyWithDog
That's a very appealing idea.
brownribbon
Outdoors though?

personally hated those too much living in Korea to ever want an asian floor table.

The El Morocco in Worcester, MA had a bar just like that and it was fantastic.

Don't put in a pineapple unless you know exactly what that implies.

I bet sunken furniture is a bit wet and gross.
RadiDaddy
Ah, a 1970s conversation pit, a place we can, like, hang out and just rap, man, like, you know, really relate to each other.
BootLiving04
Ya know a convenient place to pass a joint.
aThingWithTheStufAndTheJunk
My aunt an uncle had one and it was moreso a place where people could, like, drunkenly fall into it and hurt themselves at family gatherings.
RadiDaddy
Yeah, I think that was the more typical usage.
ephankrised
As a 70s conversation pit fan, what if we filled the conversation pit with hot water and stalled water jets in it?

so... a hot tub is too dangerous for a 1 year old, but a fire element isn't?
BadPunsAplenty
A lovely vision.
NickRivieraMD
just clarifying - we're suggesting that a pit full of fire is a safer choice for a baby than a pit full of water, right?
MySushi
Zange0
Ah, but the water is always there
redgarth
I'd make a ball pit for the kids
insertwittyjoke
Ball pits get way too gross! Better a sandbox
CookWithMeVideos
Lego Pit
yoyo42
Ooh you sadist!

They could'a done that with the hot tub, then reinstated the hot tub in a few years.

Ball pit is a great idea, or maybe a small trampoline!

Seems too small though there's no banana for scale. I assume you'd have the balls all over the place while the kids hit the edges all the time.

It's ~2.3x2.3 meters square (7.5x7.5 feet), that's pretty big

BosunMark
Thats actually a really good idea..
mendrak
Not sure how you'd keep the bugs and spiders out of it though.
BosunMark
Not to worry. The kids will make short work of those pests. Cut down on snack time too! Win-Win!
chencking
And snakes, poop, pee and vomit.
Fortherea
I don’t know, they’d have these damn balls all over the deck and the lawn.
TheVampireDante
They apparently have a dog, so it could be trained to put them back in the pit as a game.
flyingmonkeystick
It’s also be a hell of a cleanup when the kid inevitably pees in it.

As a kid I had way more fun in the sand at the park gun the ball pit. Put one of those hand operated excavators on the edge

I had one of those turtle sand boxes with the shell as the cover. then winter came and the shell became a sled and it was not built for that

Nah someone always ruins the sandpit by shitting in it
