imgur Mobile Site Suffers Scam Ad

So I'm on the mobile site browsing some fine content when out of nowhere a new tab opens. I figure my phone misinterpreted a swipe for clicking on a link or something. Then another tab opens. Then another. Then another. Finally I see this.

It had opened 27 tabs before I closed it, it definitely would have kept going until my browser crashed if I let it.

To sum it up, some shitty person snuck something into a mobile ad and it caused this. It happens, but posting here to hopefully get it into the hands of the imgur staff so they can check out their advertisers.

This kind if shit is why I whitelist very few websites in my uBlock and imgur is not one of them.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got hit with a malvertising attack once on imgur, literally the day after I put this site on my "Allowed" list in adblock.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Suffice to say, right back off the white list it went.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've seen malvertising on imgur as well, usually pop-ups claiming that "Mac OS X is infected" (I don't even have a Mac) @sarah

God dammit I hate using adblock on here but this is out of hand.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*Checks Ad-Block to make sure it is still engaged*

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, this is the only reason i don't have the mobile app anymore- it honestly sucks to randomly be redirected to a 'free gift app'

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Use the app?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

i've seen this behaviour before on infected android devices... reset your backup (source am it guy)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In case it helps: @sarah

10 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 1

Hey, it worked!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I... was totally not expecting that. Senpai noticed me? I don't know what to do now. I suppose I can just retire.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

On it! Thanks for the tag.

10 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

Damn.. I forgot the times when complaining about an issue, Sarah would actually respond. Where are you now Sarah? Are you ok?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

poor girl

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Dont forget to report it officially. I reported an issue with the mobile app and they were able to help me get it fixed quickly.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

U need to set ur clock to 00:01 1970/01/01. ;)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get these kinds of ads too. Its gotten so bad that I no longer surf on my phone at all.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know a Nigerian prince who'll be happy to buy you a new one

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He needs to download some more free ram

10 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

Some more "deditatid wam"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Paid ram is better tho. Makes it even faster.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This happened to me too. Several times.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I don't have the app though.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the whole reason I got the app.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

By that I means it happened on the mobile site all the time, but not on the app.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never had an ad on imgur

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reason #1 I cannot support even sites that deserve it on my PC... :P

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your android is expired!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

which is why I block ads, and flash, and social plugins, and fonts, and..well...every website looks like a page from a novel or the bible

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've had that happen on my laptop. Left message and Sarah emailed me back. Mine was the ad on right side of screen, one was this crap

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You need to find which one is doing it, it took me a while to find which ad

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Upvoting for awareness. I realize they need some sort of revenue to keep the lights on, but they deserve to know there are malicious ads

10 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 0

This is taken seriously. It's a breach of the agreement advertisers make with us. We will look for the offending ad and try to squash this!

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Every time I've reported malicious ads, I've had a reply within minutes. Shits taken pretty seriously. Just sayin'.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It's not even really the site's fault. The ad brokers need to get their shit together and vet what they're serving.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Adblock on Firefox will fix this

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen a ad on Imgur amd im on android

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's either something out of their control, or something they can't compromise on with their partners. They called it preexisting malware.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

If they say they "can't compromise" on *ad-borne malware*, then they don't deserve a cent of revenue they get from ad views.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Imgur is just selling the ad space; the content is provided by AdChoices and other services, who are supposed to self-police.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So complain about the ad partners, document and screenshot everything you can to show imgur adchoices is not doing their part.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is why you block ads.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@sarah this is a serious issue and I really hope you see this

10 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 1

Sometimes I just don't think companies care where they get their ads. Which is why I use Adblock when every I can. Sorry @Sarah

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Got it! Likely a third-party advertiser gone rogue (we do NOT allow this type of advertising). We will look for the bad ads and squash them.

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

That's awesome (both you responding and you taking care of this)

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Why not just contact support ? https://help.imgur.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Have previously reported but no response from them.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Having spoken to various staff on the forum, they do get back to you within a working day. If you dont get a response, get on the forum ;)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What? Instead of getting sweet, sweet upvoted out of it? That would almost be... efficient.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I have done this 11 times with O results. There is no support just a link.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Chances are contacting them AND posting will get fastest response.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And this is why block adds. Act like malware, get treated as malware.

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Can't block ads on chrome in android. I use firefox on ad heavy sites since it has adblock+

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, if I'm supposed to choose between the integrity of my hardware and the existence of this website, fuck imgur.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

not just imgur, pretty much every site and every entitled little bitch that whines about "MUH AD REVENUE"

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

A lot of sites only make revenue from ads I agree with better ad choice but they aren't "entitled" they're a business.
