Point Nemo (“nemo” being Latin for “no one”) is so far away from human settlements, if standing on it, you’d be closer to people on the ISS passing overhead, than other humans on earth. It’s the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, meaning it’s the furthest place from land. The ocean floor there is 13,000 ft (2.5 miles) down, with average water temps of 45°F. It lies within the South Pacific Gyre and therefore receives little nutrient flow, making it relatively lifeless. It was discovered in 1992 by Hrvoje Lukatela, a Croatian survey engineer, and named after Captain Nemo, the designer and captain of the “Nautilus” in his favorite childhood book, ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’. The area around it is known as ‘spacecraft cemetery’ because spacecrafts re-entering the atmosphere are directed to land there to avoid hitting civilization, and the ISS itself is scheduled to crash into Point Nemo in 2031.

New question for my mind: what is the “alonest” that I have been? I’ve worked some remote jobsites, but never more than a few miles from a road. Even traveling on remote roads, there is always some other car not far away.

TBF, ISS is only 408 km up. There's many places in the world that far from civilisation. This has nothing on Tristan da Cunha - The most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, located in the South Atlantic Ocean, over 2,000 kilometres from the nearest inhabited land. That should scratch your ADHD itch.

All space missions do. It’s just good engineering. It makes an upper bound on how much effort goes into planning fallback mechanisms, component lifespans, and how many spare parts need to be kept around in storage (even if just in case the earth-based testbeds break, and the manufacturer’s gone out of business). That becomes the estimate for the program budget. Some missions can be extended, but it gets exponentially more expensive.

It totally makes sense. I guess that, considering its lifespan and human presence on board, I just didn't see it "end" the way other man-made satellites do.
