He was unexpectedly great in that. Didn't expect that kind of performance from Jonathan Groff after Mindhunter. (He was great in that, too, but it's a completely different register.)
Overall, I thought that "Matrix Resurrections" was a wonderful way of making up for the dour ending of Matrix 2 and 3. (It'd have been nice if it hadn't been necessary to compensate for the original sequels in the first place, but, oh well.)

The acting was great. But oh man was that a huge wasted opportunity. The " you're crazy" concept alone was what should have moved the whole movie. Not this meta wink at camera that we got. At the end of watching Neo (and the audience) struggle with "is he crazy?", "maybe the matrix was fake", they reveal that it was real all along and neo is trapped in the machine mind. Cue epic Matrix 5.

Keanu lying in a bathtub with a rubber duck on his head. I only remember that because it made me feel smart that the stereotype is hackers/programmers use a rubber duck (or substitute) to help them think through difficult problems... somehow.

Talking through what you are doing to help you spot the problem/debug some code, some people find it helps to have an object to treat like an actual person so you have to properly express each line/step. I have been told that many times as I have a rubber duck collection, even though I have never purchased a single one, I just got a few randomly and it became a thing

Yes indeed, it really was a brave and culturally correct choice to never make any sequels to the lone masterpiece that is original matrix movie, which to this day has never been sullied by the creation of any additional related movies.

I didn't forget... I never knew. At any time in the movie was he actually referred to as Agent Smith? All things (about the movie) considered, what was the point of bring his character back? Especially since Harris's character was the antagonist.

I think mostly to show off what an arrogant dick Harris's character was. Like, "oh, we trapped Neo and Trinity in this closed off simulation to make them into super energy generators, and we even tossed Agent Smith in here for shits and giggles because we wanted to show how powerful we are...why is everything going wrong?"

I loved it. It did something I thought was impossible. It brought back that feeling I had the first time I watched the first Matrix movie. I could not tell what was real, and what was in the Matrix. That sense of uncertainty about what was reality was really delightful to experience once again in a Matrix film.

The first act, especially… it did something extremely rare for a sequel: tactfully acknowledged that it’s been decades since the original movie(s), set up a new story, yet didn’t abandon the old.

I enjoyed it too. People love their black and white thinking, it's either great or it's terrible. It's been long enough, I don't need the Matrix to blow my skirt up the way the first movie did and the first two sequels mostly did not (though I still think the fight in the Chalet is one of the best in the series, including the first movie).
It was good. It was an enjoyable return to this world. The basic plot was always gonna be a problem - to use the same actors with a satisfying plot would 1/?

I haven't seen it, but by some accounts Warner Brothers told the Wachowskis they would make a sequel with or without them, so Lana signed on as a result. I'm opposed to that sort of creativity under threat, regardless of the outcome. :(

I did have problems with the sequels, but two pet peeves stuck out to me, plots aside: One, why did they just have washers glued to their skin instead of the bio-ports in the first film? Too expensive? And two, who builds mechs without armoring the squishy bits actually piloting said mech?

Yeah, I liked it. I thought it was just as good as the other sequels. Which meant it was trash, but enjoyable trash. At least it had an interesting idea behind it, being basically a Gremlins 2 style fuck you.

I liked it up until the Merovingian showed up about 3/4 of the way through the movie. At that point, the social commentary went from "subdued, but definitely not subtle" to "we're literally slapping you in the face with it." It was obnoxious because they were basically saying "viewers are too stupid to get it unless it's blatant as fuck." Which is not true; a lot of us get it even when the commentary is subtle, while a lot of morons STILL won't get it no matter how unsubtle it is.
