An acquired taste, apparently. My sweetheart used to like it. I could take it or leave it. It had its moments.
I can understand how some people really love their habitual sitcoms like Friends, Cheers, Park&Rec, Reno 911, TheOffice, etc., but I just am not into watching TV anymore. Sometimes the scriptwriting can be good, the dialog snappy etc., and I'm sure they have a pretty strong appeal if you follow the character development, but I find all of them relatively tepid on a once-in-awhile basis.

I don't think Jerry is that funny, his material is kind of lame and for all the noise he does about comedy being killed the stuff he does is the safest milk toast stuff ever. THAT being said, Seinfeld is a funny show with an amazing cast and great writing.

Seinfeld is a weird thing. If you were part of that generation, it was a cultural phenomenon. Personally, the show itself is boring 95% of the time, with some very VERY funny moments; Almost all of which come from Michael Richards or Jason Alexander, rather than Jerry Seinfeld.

Only giving a show a sIngle episode once isnt much of a litmus test. It lasted for 9 seasons. It didn’t happen by accident. Maybe try an episode or two from some a the later years. Those are consistently better

This is the only take that makes sense. If you were actively avoiding it in the late 90s then you're probably a bit of a contrarian, but it's now dated and cringy and if someone really thinks it still holds up like.. damn, there's decades of better comedies.

Look, it's always been easier to say that Seinfeld is about nothing, but I'd argue, more specifically, that it's about people who can't let go, and take unimportant things out of proportion. The conflict of practically every episode would be avoided if they just left it alone, so it seems, quite ironically, that you're putting yourself in a typical Seinfeldian dilemma. You have different tastes, so what? This is not a problem. If they ask you directly, just say it's not your thing, it's fine.

The theme of approximately 100% of earlier sitcoms always seemed to be someone hears a snippet of something, completely blows it out of proportion hijinx ensues, and eventually someone figures it out. Which could all have been avoided if someone had just said "Wait? What? Explain this to me." It was a never ending lesson in people NEVER friggin' learning to communicate.

Friends is "funny" for the same reason as Seinfeld and practically every 90s sitcom that got majorly overhyped. They dump about a metric ton of canned laughter into random moments in the show and suddenly it's "funny" and everyone goes around making the jokes. 9/10 times there is a well known "joke" scene in one of these shows, you remove the canned laughter and suddenly it's just painfully awkward and uncomfortable at best, cringe inducing at worst.

It means you grew as a person. Even disregarding the sheer amount of heavy lifting that rampant homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, etc. did in your average 90's sitcom, most of the time even if you've laughed back then your mindset now is far different. Your brain is literally different, not to mention your life, your perspective, and all of those things that shape what we find amusing.

He was massively unlikable in the show, also. That's kind of the show's thing. It's about "nothing" or the minute of day to day life, but also he is single for being weird. Bad weird. He's petty and insanely fragile in the show. And by all account seemingly the same way in real life. Someone else said it best, the other characters really carry the show.

You're right, Jerry isn't funny. But the rest of the cast is fantastic and they carry him and the show. It's Larry David's humor that makes the show, not Jerry's.

80's comedians were struggling to go from "ugh, my wife and all women are awful" as a basis of all humor, and Jerry was very good at not doing this. That's it. That's the entire set.
I grew up on Caroline's and evening at the improv, and it was all "my wife is so..." etc. Some managed to eke out a niche but many fell back on haha women are awful. And this is where tv comedy came from.
There are notable exceptions (Williams, Carlin) but it wasn't until the mid 90s before standups figured it out

Honestly, yeah. The characters have zero arc. They never improve or learn as people. Their motivations are always selfish and generally hurt those around them.
So much so that the final episodes were a court case where they paraded in character witnesses of all the people they'd wronged over the years.
They're not malicious, but they inevitably passively fuck over anyone they interact with.

Not really. Curb has only 12 seasons. And Seinfeld quit on the show early after its ratings got good because he didn’t want to be cancelled for low ratings.
