While I agree with the sentiment, it doesn't make sense when you factor in how often these are lost or stolen. I've replaced more from that than breaking.
Why would it not make sense from the manufacturers perspective? You're buying repeatedly(I think I personally replace mine at least every 6 months), they're making more money each time. Amazon sells them in a 5 pack now.
Version A cost 5 dollars but breaks after a bit. Version B doesn't break but costs 10 dollars. Version B would probably be what I go for when I lose it again. So they'd be making 10 each time instead of 5. Unless I realize it doesn't matter cause I'd be buying it again anyway.
The problem with this line of reasoning is that they don't have to make version B. They can keep making version A, which you'll buy more often than you would version B, increasing profits.
I lose them before they break though. I think I've broken one, ever. They go missing all the time though. Maybe it's just the people I hang around with :/
