Being A Temporary Bachelor Is Not As Fun As You Think
I took this picture a few years ago while my wife was in Tanzania on a 3-week mission trip. I believe I was somewhere in Week 2 of living by myself. For those who have never been apart from your spouse for that long, Week 1 is great, but by Week 2, the novelty has long since worn off. I learned to just absolutely exhaust myself by filling my day with things to do, because when I had too much time to myself, I just started feeling terribly lonely. It's kind of a surprise, because I lived on my own for years before I got married. I remember laying awake for hours thinking that our house was WAY too big as I counted all the creaks and cracks our house never seemed to make when other people were in it.
Even my cereal seemed to miss her.
Believe it or not, this photo was not altered in any way. I had finished my breakfast, and was going to wash the bowl when I noticed what had happened. I rushed to take the photo before the milk moved.
Now I Have A Family, I Notice It Even More
I'm thinking about this all because I'll be leaving tomorrow for a 4-day vacation (Miatas at the Gap). It occurred to me as I was sitting with and feeding my daughter (now four months old) that, aside from a couple hours tonight before she goes to bed, this morning was the last time I'd likely see her for the better part of a week. It's the first time I've been away from her since she was born. Additionally, it's one of the few times I've been away from her older brother, now three years old. He's old enough that he DEFINITELY knows when Daddy isn't around.
I'll be honest, folks: this bothers me more than I ever thought it would. It's certainly not going to ruin my weekend, but I know I won't be taking the scenic way home!

You shouldn't post pictures of your children dude

Dude, I once had 2 weeks to myself. I watched porn constantly and jacked off. Get a hobby.

I do have hobbies. I think the time changes, but there comes a time when you're just tired of being by yourself and the novelty wears off.

I think there's a small jack off in that bowl

3 weeks with children abroad? Or in 3 weeks you suddenly had 2 children? Or your 3 week temporary psych hold expired?

lol...My wife hasn't gone on a mission trip since our kids were born (first one back in 2012). I think I took that first pic in '08-09.

The point of the story is that I missed my wife when she was gone for 3 weeks, but now that I have kids, I miss them before I've even left.

As someone in the oilfield..... ha. hahahaha. Bring on the down votes, but I'm used to not seeing my fiancé for months on end.

I think if you're used to that sort of living arrangement, it's not a big deal. When you are used to seeing each other every day, though...

I've got a buddy who is chief engineer on a cargo ship, and his arrangement is like yours. Doesn't seem to bother him or his wife.

It bothers us, that's not it... it's just we've accepted it because we know the end result is worth the suffering now...

Understood. I appreciate the honesty!
