Our search for "god" is the search for purpose, happiness, and in a more metaphysical sense the search for using the spark or spirit we have as a tool for betterment. As a skeptic myself, I see our societies as products of people wanting to buikd a better life for one another, and sacrificing small parts of themselves to make the world better. It is the small steps like staying late to clean the places of worship, or spending extra time making that special meal for a loved one, perhaps giving up a night to care for someone sick, or an evening at a soup kitchen. Whatever we call it, religious, atheist, agnostic, skeptical or otherwise we TYPICALLY want "good."

The universe and everything in it is under no obligation to make and sense to you. So shut up and learn already.

"Did God create humans. Or did humans create God."

I don't get the "skeptic" thing. You aren't being presented with two equally plausible scenarios. On the one side you have magical thinking, on the other you have science.

What are you skeptical of? What data have you seen that lends ANY credence to the magical sky daddy bit?

Where is anything that would make a logical person say "hmm...maybe..." about any of the supernatural religions?

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Science is real, God is a chimera.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That was an extremely fake laugh there at the end. Here's my issue with using religion to answer the unknowns: if you know the answer, you stop looking for it. With science, we can acknowledge what is unknown and continue to probe it until we learn about it. With religion and the "God did it" answer, there's no need to look into any further, and, historically speaking, there were consequences to those who did.

Religion, and its documented 4200+ iterations, is nothing, but a multi-author Fantasy Fiction anthology. At best it's just fantasy stories to be used for multimedia entertainment, which should be taxed of course, while at worst, it's a bloodsucking, corrupt, GENOCIDAL, parasite hoarding wealth, commodities, & lives, BESIDES all the kiddy rape; ALL of which needs elimination.

If one talks to imaginary shit &/or imaginary shit talks to one; one NEEDS one or more therapies to get that FIXED! -_-

There's over 4,000 religions today, and over 40,000 different denominations of Christianity.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When did I realize I was God? Well,
I was praying and suddenly realized that I was talking to myself

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

God of the gaps is about 5 leaps that are called one logical step.
1. Thing doesn't have an answer yet, but an answer must exist. 2. If an answer must exist, I insist it has to be supernatural because its hard to imagine it being natural.
3. Supernatural must mean a higher power.
4. A higher power must mean a god.
5. A god must be my specific god of my specific interpretation of this one religion.

Final step can be broken down into two steps, if you'd like.

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anything after 1, is completely illogical and based on "it must because i say it must"

Piers Morgan is such a smug prick.

Wasn't there more to this? Wasn't this the interview where he said "god is getting smaller all the time" because the areas where science remained ignorant were receding?

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Finish watching the video, bub

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, see, there's a reason why I put "God is getting smaller all the time" in quotes. It's because it's a quotation, and that's the phrase I was looking for.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy fuck that's refreshing to hear an argument that isn't just two asshats shrieking over each other and instead u get to hear them explain their side of it.

Fucking nailed it !! God is an ever-receding pocket of scientific ignorance

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I can’t stand Piers Morgan, but at least he gave Tyson the floor without his incessant interrupting

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Remember when one of our biggest complaints about Neil deGrasse Tyson was that he was too smug about science and had let the fame from Cosmos go to his head?

Man, I miss when the public discourse around science was "this science guy is too pedantic" instead of our current cult of ignorance revival we've got now.

It's strange watching him today. He hasn't really changed that much, but here he suddenly sounds like the voice of reason.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love that quote he mentioned though. Never heard it before, but... I can kind of feel Ptolemy's wonder through it.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Piers laughed at the end cuz he had no idea what the fuck NDT was talking about.

When I was a child being raised in the Southern Baptist Hate Cult, we were taught that the devil was responsible for all bad things and god was responsible for all good things. However, the devil had to ask permission to hurt humans, which meant god was not just aware of it, but signing off on childhood cancer and starvation and sexual abuse… god is a dick.

tl;dr: The Bible says to pray for what you want and if you believe, it will be given to you. Millions believe that some medical issue, some cancer or another, has been cured miraculously by prayer. Yet, if you gather millions of people in prayer and pray for someone's amputated limb to grow back, it will *never* happen. It hasn't happened & it won't happen.
Knowing that, your "I'll pray for you" should always, ALWAYS be "how can I help?"

Piers Morgan platforms and agrees with Israeli Nazi genocidal lunatics, US Nazi party shitbags, Rowling paid TERFS and worse.

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think one of the only good Piers Morgan clips was when Seth Andrews was on when Piers had two frauds on to discuss the Shroud of Turin.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seth said basically nothing for thirty five minutes, then let in with this cutting, brilliantly phrased and thought out dismantling of it.

They all went quiet for a moment, then rapidly started talking about the fake death shroud again.

Asking what was there before nothingness is not a well-posed question, because without time, "before" has no meaning

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The "proper" question is "what is the first cause".

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm unconvinced that nothing existed before the Big Bang. If we can agree that the Big Bang did in fact happen (which seems evident) it implies two things: that there was a location (space) where it happened and that, well... it happened (i.e., there was some notion of time such that an event can occur, since otherwise AN EVENT would seem impossible).

I don't know what that implies about previous universes or an underlying medium or a multiverse suspended in a quantum foam, but... something.

3 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Prevailing opinion in the physics community is that a "big bang" is a vast over-simplification, and many feel it is so bad that they wish the term would go away

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Disclaimer: I am not a scientist and can't do anything beyond basic math. I also have memory problems and am bad at thinking.

But it is vexing, so I try to think about it.

3 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A Human's purpose is the same as every living thing on the planet. Be born, live to exist, die. Except humans made it complicated by inventing currency.

4 days ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Being granted the ability to think makes our purpose more than simply living, we're meant to observe, to intervene, to fix, and to care for. Needless to say, we have abandoned that purpose nearly entirely.

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

And the puritanistic concept of “wasting time”

4 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If god exists in the gaps, every time a gap gets filled in, god gets smaller. Every time we go from “I don’t know, therefore, god did it” to “Now I know, and it wasn’t god”, god disappears more and more.

You would think that after enough gaps gets filled in with something other than god, we’d stop using gods as placeholders for scientific discovery. But, well, humans are pretty damn stupid.

I still remember what a coworker from my first real job in 2002 said.
"God is either a general force like gravity, or a large animal like Oprah"

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or, as he just said in the video, "God is an ever receding pocket of scientific ignorance."

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is exactly why religious people hate science. By it's very nature science is gradually killing God.

4 days ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Faster please…

3 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's what he said. But it is ever receding because the more we learn, the more worlds are open to us, the more questions we have. Inventing a microscope opened us to the microscopic world. Telescope to the cosmic world. Now we have the quantum world. It's never ending.

Not to mention when the questions asked are of a subjective nature. Like what is our purpose in life.

4 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I remember in primary school when I came out of the atheism closet and one of my incredulous classmates challenged me with "Well how do you explain the existence of trees?", and in my youthful lack of scientific understanding of physics/chemistry/botany, I said "I don't know...yet".

He was so smug. "Checkmate, atheist."

All religion is hand-wringing over the discomfort of not being able to explain something in the moment, so we invent a story that is calming.

3 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tbf, it is very unlikely science will ever have an answer for "what was before the universe began” i.e what was the first cause, so if you want it to be a divine spark that's fine, you do you.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're looking for the gap that can't be filled with science.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 15

God is the Riemann Hypothesis.

The Riemann Hypothesis is a famous unsolved problem in mathematics which is thought to be true, but hasn't been proven true generally (has been proven for t < 2.4 trillion).

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

That feels like a weird claim to me. Like... what makes you think there IS a gap that can't be filled by science? That seems to me like looking for an excuse to justify belief in a god rather than any actual evidence of one. Or are you just looking for a gap that hasn't YET been filled by science? Because then we're right back to the god of the gaps.

3 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Your mom?

3 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Lol

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why would you look for a gap that can’t be filled, rather than seek to fill in as many gaps as possible?

Even if there is a question that science can never answer, that doesn’t make “Therefore, God” accurate.

Like, if the entirely theory of evolution was utterly and completely disproved, that doesn’t prove Creationism; it just means evolution wasn’t the answer. You have to actually provide reasons; you can’t just say, “We don’t know, so it must be God.” Doesn’t work that way.

Nobody truly needs a god to find a purpose.
The only "God" that exists is the universe. It's what is and what decided what you are.

4 days ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 5

*Nobody truly needs a god.
FTFY.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You don't have to call the universe anything at all. You are 100% made of the universe. Religions argue over which conceptualization of "the universe" is "correct," at the exclusion of all others, not realizing that every conceptualization is only a man-made image; not the actual universe.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's been my perspective for decades. No worship, just respect for this big freaking place that we exist in. That's enough for me.

4 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Soooo, you argue the owners of capital who decided what options will determine/decide your lifes options, to decide on, are gods? 'Decision' asserts choice and someone to make it - you probably don't mean any decision is involved. Stuff just happens.

The idea of gods is a nonsense, invented completely out of whole cloth by people who want either to adopt their invented authority or are too scared to admit there are things they do not know about, that effect them.

Universes don't decide things.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You know that because……………..?

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They do. They decided what kind of star our sun is, what kind of planet the earth is, Not like a being picking outputs, but like things happening leading to other things happening.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

'Picking outputs' is what it is to decide things. Universes don't decide things.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I just said that they weren't "picking outputs".

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

You said that while initially asserting that they DO decide things, which is the contradiction noted. "Deciding" is the act of a thinking agent.

But also Neil Degrasse Tyson because he's a rapist and destroyed several women's careers in stem.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 10

Even beyond this he's frequently confidently incorrect while arguing with experts in other fields, and even within his own expertise he's frequently pushing incorrect things that he should know better, like the Andromeda Paradox.

3 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

Um. No he's not? He was cleared of it all. Unless there's something more recent come up?

3 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah. I'm sure three different women accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior just for funsies. So which was it, they wanted money or they shouldn't have been dressed like that?

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Yes. It's very possible for that to happen - for a group of women to all have the same or similar idea of trying to accuse a famous person for sexual misconduct in the hopes they can extort money out of them. Your reasoning of "it must be true because multiple women accused him" is a pretty toxic mentality to have that ignores all due process and adopts a "guilty until proven innocent" precedent. Just because a man is accused doesn't make it automatically true. Even if accused by multiple others
