Around 50% of front page posts come from Reddit and 50% from UserSubmitted.
Once upon a time, 200 points was all that was needed to for an imgur post to reach the Front page.
With the increasing number of users on imgur, the 200 point target was increased to 300.
Finally, imgur decided to change the system completely. An algorithm was introduced, which measures a post's popularity based on both points and time.
A post with a lot of points in a short period of time will have a greater chance of reaching the FP than a post which gets a lot of points over a longer time period.

For this reason, timing your post is crucial. Posting late at night or early in the morning, when the number of users on imgur is low, will decrease the rate of votes, and therefore your chance of reaching the front page.
Posting just before peak periods - as more people are logging into imgur- will give your post an advantage over posts posted during quieter periods.

A post that receives a high volume of upvotes in the early stages, will be more likely to climb to the top of usersubmitted/popularity, thus increasing its chances of reaching the Front Page.

Typically a post takes 4 to 5 hours before reaching the Front Page.
A post in User Submitted will typically receive between 1000 and 2000 views.
A post on the front page has the potential to reach over 1 million views.
