Kids were into My Little Pony a few years back. The episode where Discord first appears came on and I was like, "I KNOW that voice!" And had to Google it and wasn't surprised at all when it was John de Lancie! Fucking Q in the Ponyverse
Recently listened to his interview with Marc Maron, he sounds like such a kind soul. And a guy that's been through some shit. Trigger Warning, Brendan does talk about his sexual assault. http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-1404-brendan-fraser
I love that a lot of the original actors from other shows do their character's voices on this show. And that there was a live action crossover where these voice actors played their characters.
No one knows. She's been afk since April. Some say after they sold the company Alan and Sarah had to step away, others say she started using a different account to be less conspicuous. In any event judging from her last comment she knew what she was doing.
I admit, when I watched the first season, I was unimpressed. I almost didn't even start the second. But... it redeemed itself, and is probably one of my favorite ST shows now.
I recently decided to rewatch it from the start and the first few episodes definitely need to be powered through (ESPECIALLY the pilot) but it gets good fairly quickly.
Yeah, SNW is the almost I was referring too. There was one maybe two episodes in the recent season I didn't like as much, that's about it. Even then it wasn't BAD, just not as good.
Hard to put my finger on it, but the jokes seems too immature, too out of context. (I had a very similar gut feeling to the first season of Orville.) Second season, (or maybe some into the 1st) the characters and humor seemed to level out for me.
My wife tapped out after the first couple episodes, I continued to watch and told her she should give it another chance, then our mutual friend gave her shit for not watching it and so she gave in and is now sad we binged the series in a few weeks and have to wait for the next season. Also the cross over episode with Strange New Worlds is seriously top tier television.
Out of all the new trek shows, it's the only one that actually FEELS like trek. Like for the longest time the best star trek show was The Orville. You know, the star trek parody. But now SNW is redeeming the franchise from what Picard and Discovery did to it.
I think it was trying too hard to be Rick & Morty at first, but yeah, after a few episodes I thought it found its own voice. Still the best first season of any Trek show.
Supposedly, they actually did that on purpose to trick the executives into green lighting it. Like they deliberately emulated Rick & Morty and dumbed the humor down for the first couple episodes. Because execs are notoriously dumb and might not have greenlit it otherwise.
The idea that Q has just become a recurring hazard across Starfleet makes me incredibly happy. Just the image of a couple of friends from the Academy, assigned to different ships, meeting up years later and swapping stories. Then someone mentions Q and a collective groan goes around the table.
At least he's kind enough to scale his chicanery to the importance of the ship he's currently messing with. Imagine Q snapping the Cerritos to a Borg cube like he did the Enterprise.
I mean to be fair he can be literally everywhere at the same time across time and space so there is no reason he can't be bothering EVERYONE all the god damn time lol
And they break into a rendition of "Backstreets Back", in the original Klingon. Since apparently boy bands are absolutely part of the Klingon music catalog per "Strange New Worlds".
You misunderstand. Klingon has heavy metal and opera in universe. The K-POP outbursts were specifically described as "a source of their dishonor". The writers knew they could have gone with Opera but they wanted a reason for the Klingons to be pissed the fuck off instead of annoyed about a space anomaly making them sing opera our shanties, which they already do regularly
The Klingons were pissed because the singing was brought on by strong emotions and forced the singer to reveal their deepest thoughts, which much like La'an pointed out, posed a security risk. The fact that they were channeling their own version of N'Sync when they contacted the Enterprise was entirely on them.
I disagree. The anomaly was wholly human in origin so it made them sing crazy human genres instead, it's why Spock sang a human type song instead of Vulcan monk choir. Klingons are used to singing space shanties and operas on their ships, they are not used to singing human Kpop and the dance moves it entails. This a source of their dishonor for not singing in their traditional ways.
In that case, we ought to be happy his knowledge of human media was limited to the 20th century. Him forcing Picard to do some rendition of Fear Factor, like eating roaches would've been messed up. But some version of Great British Bake Off might've been fun & relaxing.
That second one needs to be a Lower Decks episode. Someone please get in touch with them. Of course it would turn out that Shaxs is the best at baking.
Q, walking down a line of sponge-cakes, stops to take a bite at each one. "Captain, your cake was a touch dry. Ransom, you seem to have mixed up the sugar & salt, horrible. Tendi, entirely too much vanilla extract, it was all I could taste. Shax? Exquisite, absolutely delicious."
Giant glowing hand appears. Forced perspective makes it look like it is going to grab the Cerritos. But then it zooms in, and we see it is just going to shake Shaxs' hand.
Picard would've cooked the roaches into a perfect delicacy while simultaneously giving a perfect Shakespearian speech on why the noble cockroach is worth cooking well, and how humanity has grown beyond fearing to eat something due to a stigma. And it would have been glorious and perfect.

This show relies too much on its predecessors. If a show can't stan on its own merits, its own writers, it is cack. This show is cack.
somnif
It gets better by the end of the first season. It still has referential humor, but the characters develop and get their own things going on.

He's giving gems to who and the what now??

Saw him speak at a panel at DragonCon about, iirc, being a non-religious creative person. Thoughtful guy.

He did an interview with Seth Andrews on The Thinking Atheist podcast. Thats right, an atheist interviewed God. :)

I love the live action one where the two of them are like 'why does everyone talk so slowly?'
mothmam
The Lower Decks/ Strange New Worlds crossover episode was so wonderful
iapplaudweightloss
It's really brief but there's a scene where Boimler runs away in the background with his signature sashay, cracks me up every time

My favourite line was "have you noticed everyone here talks so slowly?"

Always up for some John de Lancie, no matter the life form

I still love the fan cannon that Discord is just straight up Q from Star Trek, that's crossed dimensions.

Honestly the best Trek since DS9. Not to discount SNW which is also almost always hitting home runs.
jolly1337
Maybe the best since DS9 but still absolute trash. Downvote me to hell, Star Trek is fucking dead. (Orville at least has gotten parts of it right..)
zFUBARz
Sure thing angry old man. Go watch the animated series.
idiotsonfire
Its the only series that gives a remote damn about any of the others, of course its the best. Its like saying Mando is the best new SW.
idiotsonfire
It is, but its still no substitute for a series that isn't a satire.
DVSBSTrD
Don't you mean *BNW?
zFUBARz
Do I? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12327578/ Did Huxley write a star trek series I don't know about?

Yup. They call the floating camera an "imager". As soon as I saw this I knew I had to find it and clip it

Same. It’s strength is the four main characters. Their interplay and voice acting is fantastic.

I recently decided to rewatch it from the start and the first few episodes definitely need to be powered through (ESPECIALLY the pilot) but it gets good fairly quickly.

better track record than almost ever other trek series really. almost everything else has struggled for a season or two.
somethingdark
I think Strange New Worlds is the only one that's been immediately and consistently great.
zFUBARz
Yeah, SNW is the almost I was referring too. There was one maybe two episodes in the recent season I didn't like as much, that's about it. Even then it wasn't BAD, just not as good.

foxmichaels

Snooj
I'm not a Trekkie so I had no standards to hold it to. That may have helped me be an unwavering fan from episode 1.
PostalHeathen
I'm a lifelong trekkie and I loved Lower Decks from the start. I like all the new Trek shows, though Discovery's first season was as rough as TNG's.
OriginalSyn
My wife tapped out after the first couple episodes, I continued to watch and told her she should give it another chance, then our mutual friend gave her shit for not watching it and so she gave in and is now sad we binged the series in a few weeks and have to wait for the next season. foxmichaels
Having NEVER seen Strange New Worlds, I fuckin' loved that episode. I may pick that series up now, because of Lower Decks. :D
OriginalSyn
Imo SNW is the second best Star Trek series, right after 1st place that is shared by TNG and DS9
MykillMetal
Out of all the new trek shows, it's the only one that actually FEELS like trek. Like for the longest time the best star trek show was The Orville. You know, the star trek parody. But now SNW is redeeming the franchise from what Picard and Discovery did to it.
WellWellWellLookWhoItIs
SNW is far and away my favorite of the new Star Trek, and top 3 of Trek in general.
Lexxatron02
That cross over episode was perfect - so glad they did it. SNW has been a gem in its own right as well.
BrockEffingSamson
I think it was trying too hard to be Rick & Morty at first, but yeah, after a few episodes I thought it found its own voice. Still the best first season of any Trek show.

I can believe this. I admit, I'm NOT a Rick and Morty fan, which may be why I was unimpressed by the first season.
