Can someone explain the dirty nose art style? It's really prevalent now and I just wonder how/why it got its start. Some people were kind enough to explain the band aids on characters in anime/anime adjacent art and it would be so cool if someone could de-mystify this for me as well. I get it's a stylist thing, I just wonder about the provenance.

This is just a guess. Someone more qualified will probably answer you, but my guess is it represents freckles or shading caused by an upturned "cute" nose. Or both.
