I think it's because PureBDcraft doesn't have the specular/normap mapping with it. Chromahills works really well though try that map pack

There's really no particular reason why Java would be unable. It might not be ideal for games but it's not nearly as bad as people think.

The ethers guys (and the hd textures guys, for the matter) only optimise for certain gpu's, so it's pure luck whether you can run it or not.

For example: I can run ethers with my gpu, no problem. Hd textures, the same. Bumpmaps and the gpu enters brickmode. 10 frames at best.

They shouldn't. They're what, 512x512 max? Modern games often use 2048x2048 textures. Maybe the shaders are horribly unoptimized.
