Lorgar crusade slow, preaching to every newly conquered planet that emp is God. Since slow he gets noticed, nukes his version of Jerusalem to whip him into shape(Guilliman was there too)

The Emperor was pissed that Lorgar was using the Great Crusade to build a religion around him (the Emperor). As punishment he had the Ultras destroy Monarchia, Lorgar's pet project. A cathedral world.

So the tech priests see The Emperor as a sort of avatar of their god, The Omnissiah. Lorgar wanted a god to worship. The Emperor was very anti religion and never wanted to be worshiped but he realized that the fastest way to get the martians on his side was to just let them revere him. Lorgar is a dangerous zealot, he wanted nothing more than to serve a god. The Emperor saw the trouble such a thing could cauce and told Lorgar to stop. So Lorgar went and worshiped the chaos gods instead.

Also the Mechanicum that Big E was dealing with was a lot more similar to Cawl than the modern cog boys. So a lot less reverent and more willing to innovate, given their Omnisiah was actively inventing new technologies.

The Emperor told the Machine Cult that he was a physical representation of their god, the Omnissiah, in order to gain their cooperation. Lorgar is a Daddy's boy who worships the ground his father walks on, and the Emperor is disappointed because he thought he raised his son better than that (he didn't raise his sons at all)

Dunno how much you know, so apologies for anything redundant: The Adeptus Mechanicus of Mars believe the Emperor to be their "Omnissiah", their Machine God. They make all the guns and spaceships and power armor, so he let them go on believing that so he could have access to their knowledge and resources.
Lorgar, meanwhile, was a Primarch—one of the Emperor's kids—who believed his dad was a literal god, but the Emperor disliked religion (usually) so smacked him down so hard he fell to Chaos.
