Recently there was a post on here about diamonds. Thinking about that, I came to the conclusion I couldn't really be bothered by those.
Then two days ago, I met a recently engaged couple and went to congratulate them. Only thing that happened was that she showed me THE RING (no other reaction).
In my mind I was like " you two both found some to love and who loves you, how is a bit of metal and stone important in all this?"
I managed to say it was beautiful, but probably was not impressed enough.
What is it with mainly women about wanting expensive rings and guys asking fathers for permission these days?
This nonsense even has reached the Netherlands. In the eighties when I was small, it was never like this. You weren't given away. How can you be given? You're nobody's property to give.
Well, thanx for reading my rant.
Tl:dr : I think being loved and loving that person is the greatest gift you get in life. And a promise for better or for worse is way more important than a ring.
Off-topic:
Somehow I googled a picture of a white gold ring. Those are only useful to a guy named Thomas Covenant. Reading the books again after more than 20 years and I like them even better.

Girls showing the "Ring" - any comment I can make will likely involve the words "Christianity" "Control", and a lot of DV.

Quality marriage > pricey ring

Ah, to each their own, if the ring makes the person happy, be happy for them, thats what life is about, just letting people be happy
awesalots
Bad sign if the ring is the only happy part.

1/2 - I was adamant about not having a diamond for my engagement ring. I wanted a sapphire since it’s my birthstone. I like simplicity and

2/2 Comfortable. Having a gaudy ring isn’t for me. The thought that went into it meant a lot. “Permission” is ridiculous. I’m not property.

I'm glad that I'm not the only that thinks this way.

As an American woman, I don’t know. We are taught it’s a sign of true love. But I’d rather have a relationship than a ring.
Hemelsblauw
Yep, me too.

I was engaged once. Beautiful ring. He loved showing it off, I didn’t. He even admitted after we split that it was a badge of ownership. :(

Jaiks! I'm really sorry that happened to you.

Tradition matters to people. Diamonds are traditional. (Yes, yes DE Beers and N.W. Ayer blah blah). Point is,we don't have a lot of 1/2
Aeithen
2/2 tradition left in our world and it's important to people that there is some ceremony to life.
Hemelsblauw
It never was a tradition in the Netherlands.
Hemelsblauw
Okay I get the tradition part. But what if it's a bad tradition? What if teaches boys and girls that they're not equal?
gunjee11
What? Boys and girls not equal. What?
Aeithen
I don't see how it teaches them they're not equal. Please expand on that.

The girl gets the expensive ring. What does the boy get?
gunjee11
A watch?a ring?whatever the dude wants....this sounds more like a you issue..

A lovely wife.
