Sid Meyer's Civilization cost $20 at the mall the week it came out.

This is outright a lie, I snes games were way cheaper than ps4 games, even taking into account the changes in economy. At least in Mexico

Then raise the price, get rid of collector editions, gambling loot boxes, and microtransactions. They won't because they make more this way.

Activision, dat you?
BestUsernameICouldThinkOf
And the post-release costs have risen dramatically.

You are a Class-A ********. Change my mind.

Maybe if they made good games instead of marketing the shit out of crap games, they'd have better profit margins.

This simply isn't true. 30 years ago a new game was around $30, they went to $40 in the late nineties, then $60 in the late 00s.
WalterSobchaksWorldOfPain
No they were not. New 64 and PlayStation games were $50-60
Lastxittoforever
N64 and PS were 50$ if I remember correctly, playstation 2 on the other hand was definitely 60$ a game.
You can file old newspaper ads online. The big name games (the only ones people remember now) were $60.
Dude, I lived through it. I bought my copy of FF7 for 50$ brand new when it came out. That was 1997.
It sounds like we are both right. See pictures below

Uh, yes they have. Nintendo games used to cost $40, and those had hardware inside them. Today's games are $60-70 and are digital.
Now adjust for inflation
Ocarina of Time brand new $60, Fallout 4 brand new $60. Not adjusted for inflation.
And the ocarina of Time came in a cartridge that had hardware (chips and circuitry), fallout 4 is a digital download.
I’m not arguing what the physical thing you purchased was made of, I’m just saying your pricing was wrong in your original comment.
You're still not getting it. If you correct for the cost of production and deployment, older games are far more expensive.
I’m not fighting you about production or hardware, so stop throwing that around. You said they were $40, I’m saying they weren’t. That’s it
