It's hard in the moment, because your brain just wants to look at the results of the transactions as opposed to the inputs. You just see "I gave you $30 for $40, you only spent $20, I only spent $30" because once that first pile is totaled, your brain just sort of aggregates it rather than separating it into "My $20" and "His $20".
