Ironically lying law enforcement officers are one of the few things that make me a supporter of the death penalty...

Police academies should maybe have a large wall where corrupt officers are stood before, and used as target practice by cadets...

Different topic. Police lying, means juries should be more skeptical of their testimony. It has nothing to say on whether society should punish the most extreme crimes with death.

ranklin expressed this sentiment in a 1785 letter to Benjamin Vaughan

No because we’ve known this for decades.

Not with crimes with DNA evidence. I was conflicted then saw a case where a man kidnapped a girl. It was caught on a store's camera him doing it. She was found buried in his back yard with dirt in her lungs meaning she was alive when he buried her. His semen was inside her cause he raped her. The guy didnt even deny he did it. Watching the father of the girl weep uncontrollably for his daughter and what she went through I will never forgot. The death penalty was made for that man

I generally dont support the death penalty, however those involved with epstien get a free pass.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That would require a great many Americans to look farther ahead than the immediate problem, which is something that we are famously bad at.

I also find it interesting that we all know cops lie, but when the cops accuse people of certain crimes; then people leap to attack the accused and fully believe the cops. It's weird.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know, I completely agreed with this.... until... the Epstein Files came out. Now, to quote a great philosopher, "The Boulder is conflicted..."

It's pretty simple: if you're okay with innocent people getting the death penalty, you should support the death penalty. If you're not okay with innocent people getting the death penalty, then you should not support it.

Equally important: if you believe that prison is a place for the storage of bad humans, you're fine with life without parole. If you believe that prison is for rehabilitation of prisoners, you're not fine with life without parole.

The death penalty isn’t meant to solve problems. It has two real purposes. It appeases the masses by having a punishment that is final and absolute, even if it’s more costly & no more effective at protection than LWOP. It also feeds into the middle class propaganda of deterrence, through the misunderstanding of crime being undertaken only after a rational weighing of potential consequences

I hope so.

There’s a terrible caveat here. While the vast majority of the Left is against the Death Penalty, many (including me) are not against killing. In fact, we might *need* to kill in self-defense from authoritarian terror. It’s horrifying, but that’s where we are in Trump’s America.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, because enforcement is just one branch of the legal system. Being caught "lying" is the quickest way to have your case thrown out.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

I’m against the death penalty except for pedophiles. There is no reform from that and I have zero, and I mean ZERO empathy for them.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They won't even stop supporting executions of innocent people out on the street, you think they'll stop supporting executions of 'criminals'?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe for white people.

Death penalty is horrific and disgusting and worse than useless and should never exist in a civilized society, Buuuuuut.....lots of Nazis are going to be charged with treason in the near future and it would be a shame to do away with the death penalty right when it finally might be a bit understandable and useful.

5 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

It doesn’t exist in civilized societies and hasn’t for decades

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

And that is the part that I hope people realize, death penalty should not be normal.
It is immoral, and 10 times as bad when you factor in all the innocent people put to death by it.
Let them rot in jail, forgotten.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s wrong for all sorts of reasons besides being evil and right for zero reasons

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Personally, my feeling on the Death Penalty has always been that there should be some sort of irrefutable evidence, like they caught the guy in the act on video, or something like that, and otherwise you revert to life in prison.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But this problem applies to all legal punishment. And while death is final and imprisonment is not, later exoneration is still very unlikely. Additionally, there is no way to really pay for lost time. No amount of money can compensate 5 years or more lost.

IMO putting someone in prison for life is still very final, very dependent on police honesty, and perhaps more cruel than execution.

I support the next apocalypse.

When I ask someone why they're pro death penalty I get the same response, "It's a good deterrent!" I say, yeah I see what you mean. Ever since they made legal again the murder rate has gone way down!" Then I eyeroll, scoff and walk away because I'm talking to a moron.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I certainly feel that way, I was wrongfully accused.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's homicide. You know what the cause of death on every death certificate after an execution is? Homicide.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No… Because most of the people who support the death penalty don’t CARE that police are lying… They just want to see people they don’t like be punished and don’t care how it happens.

For the record, I am now and have always been AGAINST the death penalty, just in case that wasn’t clear.

5 months ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 3

also against a regulated mandate to penalize fatally, though when i read about some parent/guardian ending an abuser of their child well im for that version. and ya, the ppl who care are already making good decisions no evidence required, the fault in the policy to others is seen as an opportunity to inflict their ways with harm versus any form of advocacy for something good.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

After the whole system gets ripped out and rebuilt, I would wholeheartedly advocate for removal of the death penalty.
In the interim, unfortunately, there are Nazis that need to learn to dance on air.

I was robbed with a gun to the back of my head.

I hope the people that did it get help before they kill anyone or get killed themselves...

Millionaires, on the other hand, deserve guillotines.

Murdering the desperate doesn't make anything better, and never has. Murdering the greedy would solve nearly every problem.

I don't believe life is sacred. I believe in doing what works. The death penalty (and the legal system in general) doesn't.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. The death penalty has never made ANY logical sense, unless you just want REVENGE, and it seems many do want it...

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Honestly not even.
If it was revenge they would let people beat the criminals to death. They have always strived to eliminate people who have no future hope of producing capital, and in the case of the country's worst criminals it's easy because nobody will argue

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The government should never have the power of life or death over it's citizens.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

exactly. no one should--that's why we created civilization, so we could stop living like brainless idiots. it's not going quite as well as we thought, though...

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Going too well. The braindead idiots dont think of the generations that built the comfort they live in and now wasn't to tear down.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

a lot of people talking about revenge as if it's the most horrible thing and antithetical to justice. it's not. a lot of times justice is revenge, in a polite society we give up personal justice to the state but in the absence of a state justice system the only justice that exists is the one you enact yourself.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

someone wrongs you and they suffer a consequence and attempts are made to make you whole from the wrong doing. in that instance Justice and revenge are one and the same, in civilization that process is mediated by a court to prevent the pendulum from swinging too far in the other direction. example. you get robbed and the person gets caught, they lose freedoms and your stuff is returned. justice and revenge are one and the same.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

People against the death penalty would rather let a few killers live than take the chance of killing an innocent person.

People for it would rather kill a bunch of innocents if they think they'll probably get the bad guys in the process.

Whether or not cops are lying isn't even really relevant.

5 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

the reason why the death penalty shouldn't exist isn't because of the possibility of killing an innocent person; rather the point is that no one deserves to be murdered, even after committing a crime. If they are murdered for committing a crime, then we are simply seeking revenge, which goes against the entire concept of justice in a civilized society.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

In correct, if a person chooses to do violence to others they can take a dirt nap. Tolerance of people like that is what allows a large number of issues to never go away.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its not even about justice. It is about eliminating waste. A repeat offender is never going to change, no point wasting time and money trying to reform them when they clearly aren't interested. There are far more pressing things that need the attention, like taking care of the elderly and educating the kids.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Except, crime is a social construct. And different countries decide what is or isn't criminal (and it would have to be criminal to be able to get a death sentence). A large number of senators are guilty of repeatedly bankrupting companies, but that's a civil issue, so no death sentence. Stealing wages is a civil case, that has thousands of repeat offenders, no death penalty. The only people ok with death penalties, are the ones who know the crimes they commit to never face it.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

There is a level. Take a life, lose yours....not fully on board with it. You're a serial killer? And we have an insane amount of evidence that proves it? Yeah, sorry, in the dirt you go.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind--now you have two lives lost, when you could have rehabilitated the perp, potentially, or at least had them continue to contribute to society, or at least keep them away from society, etc etc. your idea to kill them is simply revenge--nothing more, and that has no place in a civilized society. if you want revenge to be a legal thing, then by all means go live in a third world country (we're heading there ourselves) or maybe the woods.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

You can't rehab a serial killer. They can't contribute to society. And sometimes, a punishment needs to match the severity of the crime and imo, taking multiple lives is worth losing your own.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

they can contribute to society by making license plates, maybe they can even write poetry. don't be so quick to send people to their deaths because you don't like them.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Its not about liking them. Its about managing waste. 3 strikes and in the waste bin you go, straight to the grinder so that nobody else can be harmed by you.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, your opinion is that serial killers are the only ones who should be sentenced with the death penalty? I’m just checking if I got that right

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not the only ones, it was just an example of there being a level of severity. I know that with some states or places, simply murdering 1 person is enough to land on death row.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I support the idea. Perry Farrell said:

"Some people *should* die...that's just unconscious knowledge..."

and he was right. We all know, deep down, that the world would be better off without specific people.

However,

Nothing I've seen in my years gives me any confidence at all that humans can be trusted to decide WHO, exactly, those people are. So while I agree wholeheartedly that some people deserve to be kicked off the planet, no system of and by humans can be used to ethically do so.

5 months ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

Is it that we think they *should* die, or just that we've come to the conclusion that we don't want to live in a society with them in it?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh great, here come the A I death panels…

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

This spring, starring Chris Pratt

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, no need to wait, algorithms have been deciding specifically who lives and who dies for a while in the medical insurance field.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

there's also the idea that any murder (the death penalty in this case) outside of self defense or defense of others is simply revenge, and basing a system off of revenge doesn't jive with true justice in a civilized society, but your logic kinda works too. How can we possibly trust ourselves to be objective and make a decision to end a life that can't be taken back? We can't, is the answer.

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

The "some people should die" thing incorporates the idea that inhuming certain people *is*, ultimately, self-defense, as they could no longer harm others. That's obviously highly arguable, but yeah, either way, it's not a decision that we're able to ethically make. If we can't guarantee zero errors, none at all, ever, then we can't do it even if the core idea is right.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

killing people is wrong anyway, and if we agree on that, just because someone else has committed x crime doesn't mean we now have the magical responsibility to just completely forget that killing is wrong and decide to kill them as punishment. it just makes zero sense.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

We don't agree on that, though, we agree that the death penalty can't be done ethically, and that it shouldn't be done.

There are some conditions, defense-of-self, defense-of-other, where lethal action is still correct action, so agreeing with the position that killing people is always wrong isn't possible for me.

At the least, however, I suspect we both think it's best avoided.
