The wording is somewhat confusing. The sub had traveled around 10 miles /horizontally while under the ice/ to its scan point before it disappeared. Not 10 miles down.

Could be it's a poorly worded description of it being ten miles from the edge of the shelf before contact was lost. Not 10 miles down but 10 miles in from the edge.

It is. 10 miles under the ice as in "it had traveled 10 miles while under ice and was that distance away from the ice edge" not "it had gone 10 miles down". Same exact wording confusion as 20000 leagues under the sea (which was the distance traveled while submerged, not depth as well).

From what I've found, that 10 miles was horizontal, not vertical.
The sub was autonomosly mapping the underside of the Dobson ice shelf, and ran 14 successful missions in 2022.

Milky way gates can dial outside the galaxy just fine, given enough power. It's only the Pegasus ones (specifically their DHDs) that couldn't dial the milky way without the Atlantis control crystal.
