A judge is supposed to be impartial, they are not supposed to be swayed by public opinion. Instead they have to look at the laws that are in place to make their rulings.
Ancient Athens was all about democracy, mob rule. They practiced ostracization, where individuals were banished from the city, there were no laws protecting any abuse of this practice. Doing nothing wrong was not guarantee that you would not sent packing.
Premier Smith is lucky that "democracy" is not in Canada's legal system, otherwise Albertans could simply vote to confiscate her property and put her in jail without a trial, just hold a referendum.

the holocaust was legal, slavery was legal.

There are many countries where people have almost no rights. That would be because of the laws in place there.
Laws are about power and who has the ability to enforce them. Whether or not those laws are just or even beneficial is entirely reliant upon the culture and people that make them.
SlayerOfGoat
What law are you talking about?

Laws are, in every way, about restricting your freedoms. Arguably to better society, but restricted all the same.

The PM needs to call out the people spurring the separatist movement on from outside. Do some charges like France is doing to Musk.

We lost america when we lost the supreme court(s). Good news though, this has happened before and was changed in time. It will swing back this time too, probably before catastrophic climate change but 2050 sure is looking close lately
MiserCrass
Not all laws are good, nor enforced equally. We're still a long way from making any perfect system. :( also athens DID have laws, dont lie.

This whole post is weird lol. Super weird theyd claim there were no laws in Athens.
pocsaclypse
judicial impartiality is a myth created by those in power to use the law to control their subjects with less visible violence

Law is a pretext for state violence

Lack of laws can end in bears. https://seanjkernan.medium.com/how-a-libertarian-utopia-was-ruined-by-bears-2b8384ad651c

I choose the bears

Wise choice. Possibly a better way to go than being poisoned to death by the guy dumping his sewage upstream of your water source.
