Our old man usually gets a little trazodone on fireworks holidays, to help him deal. He's kind of a lightweight and 50mg will zonk him out. He's also started to experience some sundowning recently - probably the start of some age-related cognitive dysfunction. So he might start getting a little evening treat to take some of the edge off.
Kiares
I should have drugged mine, but he's got surgery tomorrow and I didn't want to deal with any side effects.
sirbartonslady
You do what you must to reduce their stress. As long as the vet says it's okay and won't hurt them in the long run, it's safer for them than the stress and fear. Hell, my vet gave us Trazodone to sedate my little boy when he was recovering from bladder surgery, just so he wouldn't go stir crazy and strain the stitches. Anyway: Your dog! What a sweet old boy he is. Give him kisses for me, please? I love him <3
NachtReborn
He looks comfy. Possibly might need his bear (or whatever stuffy he likes) and another blankey

I drugged a young cat I found today. It was too much being in a quarantine crate and the fire works. You do what you can to keep them calm and happy. /shrug

My childhood dog hated fireworks and thunder. My current lab just...doesn't care. Sirens, loud cars, nothing phases him. EXCEPT if you make any kind of weird noise with your lips, like a raspberry. He hates that shit.
Redyls
thats fine. i drugged myself for NYE! happy new year!

An alternative that works for many is to play fireworks sounds on a speaker in the weeks leading up to the actual fireworks. Start quiet and increase volume day by day.
NotTodaySucker
We do this and it helps, but more for the random fireworks the week before. What we do additionally is feed treats for every bang when he doesn't flinch in the weeks before. He was fine yesterday but barking in a "shut the hell up" way around midnight. No panic this time.

Our old man has gone almost deaf this year, so we did not need to, but I do understand and would do it myself too.
Allthegoodnamesweretakenbeckygod
Had to do the same. Poor guy was going absolutely bonkers with the fireworks
Gwenx
We have to drug ours too, last year despite being so drugged she couldnt walk propper she still shook so mich the whole couch vibrated!
I took her to the most closed of space, the hallway and i laid there with her, vibrating, while we waited for the worst to be over. We had music and stuff to muffle the sounds a bit.
Well this year she got less medication and she didnt shake at all! She barked at the loud noices! She also wanted us all in the same room but she was soo good this year!!
Gwenx
Words cant describe how proud of her i am this year! She was so good and she "just" barked!
She wasnt happy at all but she tolerated the fireworks and she sought company and safety with all of us! So good <3
Gwenx
Here she is, such a good girl, this was maybe 15 minutes in to the worst part of the evening <3

Our dog is on Xanax for the last 5 Nye's now, she went from shivering and trying to crawl on top of us, to a stoner who cares for nothing but food and sleep. Drugs are cool

The 2nd worst day of the year for pets. It's not even midnight where I am yet and my cat is sticking to me like glue.

Love his sweet powdered sugar face

I've been drugging my dog on New Years and American Independence Day for the last couple of years. I found out the hard way that my girl is NOT a lightweight.
WHSK3
You got your memes all mixed up. You meant Good Guy Greg.
WhiskyBravo
I also got tractor beamed into the couch last night but managed to peek one eye open at midnight to see the fireworks
vericon151
Why confession bear?
Lots of people do it as fireworks scare the f out of them. I try to close off the room and play background noise as my little pup goes to her crate/bed and says fuxk this I’m out!
iquestionthepinappleeveryday
Yep. Melatonin on the 4th of July and NYE or I have a 200 lbs of terrified dogs in my bed.
Corrupy
I recently started doing this too and i think my dog enjoys it a lot more. She was standing and just staring into nothing until i plonked her onto the bed and she was out.
xtraa
My ex-gf did this with her neighbours dogs after they were barking for hours during the night. She gave them 10mg benzos each. I'm not saying this is okay, but it's understandable since the owners left them alone for nearly 24 hours and she came home from her shift.
bourbonandbaddecisions
I drugged me and both the dogs.
SpikedDoggos
2 of my 3 are on drugs, big boy just got a second dose. They're all also hiding behind mom lol

Because all the letters are uppercase, I thought you meant Bill Nye and I spent a little too long wondering why Bill Nye the Science Guy would need to drug your dog.

I wish I did this as well. Fireworks are illegal in my town, so I didn’t expect it to be an issue. I was very wrong.
ricpaul
We have one or two explosion each and every weekend that freak the dog out. I say explosions because they are clearly too loud to be legal (and even legal fireworks are only allowed from 6PM of 31st of Dec. to 2AM 1st of Jan). It has been mayhem all last week and still regular explosions now (6PM on Jan 1st). I often wish those assholes would hold their fireworks a little longer... But reading about a 14 year old that lost his life last night (in a firework free city near me) still hits home...
PatrickMcChunky
Where's mine?
IgnisInvictus
trazodone ain't the one you want to be on yo.
Dergen89
What is the one I want to be on to feel as relaxed as this dog looks yo?
IgnisInvictus
Ambien. It's not a getting you high drug. It's a go to sleep drug. You won't remember anything you did in the morning so, ya best just go to sleep.
DonkeyGoat
You can get one at the shelter.
camn333
They give out drugs at the shelters!?
ThatGuyWhoIsSkepticalOfEverything
The best kind. There will be a small adoption fee, but absolutely worth infinity times over.

In my experience, trazodone is not the "fun" kind of sedative. It's the drag you to sleep and keep you there for 12 hrs--rolling in fractured nightmares and sweat, legs doing the Charleston--then upon waking up, you chug a gallon of water and fall back into fitful slumber. It wasn't for me lol.
delusionaldaydreams
I took it for a little bit many years ago. It allowed me to get to sleep but didn’t keep me asleep. I had strange dreams,
Not necessarily nightmares, but pretty fucked up. If I woke up after 2 hours of sleep, I would be up for hours in a somewhat drunken state. Oh, and it had a somewhat embarrassing side effect…
Mercurybird
I love this description.
guyanesebro420
Yup that's about right
dracokitty
It did nothing but make my brain groggy and barely work in the morning. Still slept like shit.

Eh, I've had worse.

Thank you. People like you make the Internet awesome.

It is understandable. Last year, we drove to the beach (in utter shit weather) and slept in the car for my poor dog - he's already traumatized from his abused days on the street, and literally licked his legs bloody from the non-stop fireworks for weeks leading up to New Years. This year, we left the country entirely. Fuck the Netherlands and their immaturity with fireworks.
nonottelling
So very much true. I’ve spent two nights in a row in my bathroom with white noise blaring in the livingroom, all to give my dog a semblance of peace. Amsterdam had a fireworks ban. Seemed like a fucking warzone though. On the 31st and the first 1st as well.
People are moronic idiots.
GlacialFlour
It is genuinely awful. Of the various things I have issues with in the Netherlands, fireworks (and the people using them illegally) are at the top of the list. Last year, a 13 year old kid on my street lit off a single firework at a time a few times a day right in front of our house, just to fuck with us. I snapped on him in January after 5 months of him terrorizing our dog. I not-very-calmly informed him that he has trained my dog to hate him - and all fuckhead blonde bullies.
GlacialFlour
He started in fucking September. Fucking SEPTEMBER. We know from other neighbours that he is a bully at school, also - that kid needs a goddamn beating, and if he pushes me any further and/or fucks with my dogs, it is entirely possible I will not be able to resist. You can only push someone so far.
nonottelling
I completely understand. I’ve had moments of wishful thinking about going out and simply bashing in heads that light fireworks. Thoughts just to calm myself some because I get irate when people do this.
57% calls for an allout ban. A 14-year old died. Another 48-year old died as well. Maybe, just maybe we’re on track for a nationwide ban. But next year I think I’ll finally cave and leave for quieter places with my dog. Just to be sure.
GlacialFlour
No, no, rules are for others. Not me.

Yes, better leave. We most certainly will be. What type of doggo do you have?
