It was smart, because they actually got someone who knows their stuff (or at least their lore) to make it at least plausible if you know some physics. Obviously there's a lot of magical hand-waving going on, but it made things consistent.
From what I've heard, it's consistent enough that if you have enough knowledge about how the ships "function", you can actually correctly diagnose a lot of issues that come up in the show
TNG is probably the best for this stuff. They get a little looser as the series' progress, but for example, all the drugs the doctors use follow similar real-world naming conventions and generally are all used consistently to treat the malady they were introduced for. Voyager's Doctor does overuse Inaprovoline for whatever ails the crew, but at least he never uses it to treat brain problems.

As an engineer, it's not that far off…

The hamster should be running the other way

Depends on the model.

Also, that’s clearly a Syrian hamster. Real cars use Russian hamsters.

This is a typical case of an internet poster being confidently wrong and ignoring that the gear is clearly in reverse.

Well that's OBVIOUSLY the inside of the imgur servers.
cousteau
With a functioning hamster.
Fhant
That's impossible, the hamster is alive and the whazitcalled isn't connected to the thingamajig!

Also not enough bananas.

And no giraffes.

The giraffe SHOULD be in the passenger seat, but somehow it's driving the car now.

I do like the anecdote that they'd just write "[TECH]" in a script and then backfill with technobabble later.

Inaprovaline is probably the only thing they had a steady supply of, so it was used in place of more appropriate medications when possible.
