It was a free game. Did you think it spawned from somewhere benevolent? Do people often spend millions developing products they offer for free out of pure love?
Wait you forgot we live in "modern BS world" were you have to pay AND be the product by having your data sold so you can be bombarded by more Product (TM). You dont want your data sold? Just dont use any product or service by any company. Its easy!
Actually, the process started with Ingress. That was the game that had us building their map. The same data was reskinned for P/Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite (thankfully now shuttered permanently). Portals got turned into Gyms. XM Clusters -> Pokemon. It all goes back to Ingress in 2012.
I stopped when my inventory got maxed out with storage boxes full of XM Bursters. I 'owned' all the portals in my area and it just got tedious. More's the pity, because it started out as an amazing way to get me off my fat old butt and out in the "fresh" air again.
Also I have ingress to thank for meeting my wife, got me out of the house and meeting up with hundreds of other people over the years, one of which was my wife :)

Is this true? Because if so, you have to admire the creativity

If the app is free, you are the product.

And if you have a Roomba they now have a detailed map of the inside of your house
mrmartini
Does the Roomba know that? Because that big idiot keeps getting stuck under the TV stand.

I dunno when we fucking forgot this but remember the wisdom; If you're not paying for a service the product is YOU.

The battle for human minds was always leading to this...

Every now and then I reload ingress, play for 5 minutes and remember why I stopped, and quit. I made so many portals...

Yeah I submitted hundred of ingress portals, for them to later become Pokestops using the pics I had submitted. Was kinda cool tbh.
