This tiny snapper hatchling was hanging out at the launch ramp as I was dropping in my kayak. Adorable little buggers. Wondering if They are possibly the offspring of a much larger snapping turtle they got hit by a car and we took to the rehabber and released into this pond in this exact spot.

They are always cute lol just...bigger. I was kayaking late one evening and a bass jumped in front of my boat and this giant snapping turtle going after the fish rammed into the bow of my boat....gave zero fucks that I was there 😂 woke me up big time!

Pretty soon it'll be a full fledged Dino on a rock like this guy!
CJwhoIsKindToAllKinds
Absolutely! :-) I put a link in my description above to show the grown up that got hit by a car by my house and we released back into the pond. We are hoping that this little one is the offspring of that one :-)

Little bitey bois.
CJwhoIsKindToAllKinds
Lol I have yet to be bitten by one. I try to give them some healthy distance if I know they are there 😂 -usually while trying to coax them off the roadway. They are also why I don't swim in lakes and ponds up here (well that and leeches in ponds).

Probably the offspring to a snapper that got hit by a car and we got back from the rehabber and released into that pond. I'm really hoping...

Snapping turtles do not care for their offsping.
CJwhoIsKindToAllKinds
I know, but I do 😜
DrPepper523
ha that's great, glad you're looking out for them! I saw one crossing a small road the other day, but he was the biggest snapper I've ever seen so I was like not today Mr turtle, I think you're crossing just fine and I'd like to keep all my fingers
RunawaySpoons
I had no idea they had such long tails
CJwhoIsKindToAllKinds
Snapping turtles are known for their long tails, which are often described as being as long as, or even longer than, their carapace (upper shell) 😁 And it's really really really super important not to try to move a snapping turtle by grabbing their tail. You can injure the turtle really badly by doing that. It's recommended to grab them by the shell on either side out of reach of their mouth if you have to lift them to move them off of a roadway.

The name “snapping turtle” is a bit misleading. In some parts of the country they’re called smooching turtles because of their gentle and affectionate nature. They all like to be scratched on the chin and it is always safe to do so. And as a steadfast rule, as a smooching turtle grows the more docile it gets. So if you see a real whopper be sure to get all your fingers in that face. Keep herpin’ y’all.

Incidentally, they make the *best* noise when you pick 'em up. A prehistoric "how dare you"
CJwhoIsKindToAllKinds
Ohhhh yes they do. The one that we rescued from the street did that. He calmed his butt down tho during transport (an old towel covering them calms them like a blanket over a bird cage does for birds). Imagine if I got hit by a car and left for dead I would make a similar sound if someone tried to touch me 😆

And that neck can stretch a looooonnng ways.
