Don't do it.

TL:DR The realization that if I killed myself, I would have left a messy apartment, bills, and other responsibilities for my sister to clean up (plus my death) ...and that stopped me from doing it.

Sharing this in case it helps someone else get through their darkest time. For the record therapy has helped me a ton, I have not had suicidal thoughts in years.

About twenty years ago, I felt alone and empty. I had come out two years prior and lost the majority of my close friends (church kids), my parents barely spoke to me which was a stark contrast to the daily calls from when I was in the closet, I was working to support myself and attend college for biology, and barely holding it together.

My biology courses had taught me a ton, the worst of which may have been the sure fire, painless ways to die. And as it would happen on a recent hike I had found one of those sure fire ways, growing in abundance... so I grabbed some in case it ever came to it. A few weeks later is when my darkest moment came. School had finished for the fall semester, I barely got a 2.5 (C's were unacceptable for me growing up). I had worked almost 60 hours a week the past two months and my bank account was just under $100 because next semester charges had cleared. Rent was due in a week, my mother was trying to manipulate me into going to an anti-gay therapist, and to top it all off my few close friends (roommate included) were all gone for the holidays.

After writing it down, and being in a better mind set, it seems like life wasn't that bad, but at that time I just felt empty and worthless; I knew the world would be just fine without me. I had taken the weekend off to recover from finals. At one point, I remember staring at the plant I had collected on my hike when I saw it again in the fridge, thinking "just swallow it! You'll have a nice nap". I closed the fridge, leaving the plants there, and headed back to the couch.

My phone rang a little later. It was my sister asking if I would be home longer than just Christmas day. We were close, but I hadn't told her what I was going through. I told her I might not make it, but if I did, I would have to work the next day so yes just Christmas day. She then asked if I had received a package from our godmother (I hadn't). My sister goes on to explain our godmother had just finished cleaning out her mom's house after she died earlier that year. There were insane amounts of boxes and come to find out open bank accounts, credit cards, (banks were a whole other fiasco she had to deal with) and a basement filled with years of hoarding. Our godmother had found some old pictures and they were in the mail. I can't say I was too excited. We wrapped up our conversation and as soon as I hung up the phone, it rang again. Work needed a server.

So as I am getting ready for work, thinking those plants will be there afterwards, I am finding myself lifting piles of clothes to find my apron, and another pile for my pants, and ANOTHER pile for my shirt....and it hits me. This messy apartment would be where my body would be found. I wouldn't care, but my sister would likely be the only person who would come deal with...well everything. Lord knows my parents wouldn't. Even if my roommate cleaned up these clothes, dishes, apartment... there was still banking to deal with, plus all the clothes and things in the apartment would have to go somewhere. Suddenly I realized that suicide may help me escape, but I would be dumping a ton of things on people around me. That would be incredibly unfair to them.

It took me a bit to compose myself and head off to work, but I started forming a better plan. I was going to get all of my affairs in order and get the banking and other personal account details to my sister "in case I got in a fatal car wreck or something". I also made myself a deal that I would have to clean out everything from my apartment (and my car which was also a disgusting mess) - just donate it or something. Lastly, all of my personal things that weren't donated would be boxed like a moving crew, all so that whoever had to deal with my death would have the least amount of things to deal with. That plan and promise to myself stopped me from ending my life many times in the following years. Oddly enough, I think getting things in order also helped pull me out of my depression every time.

Therapy also helped. I started drawing personal boundaries, mourning the loss of friendships and building better friendships with supportive people. I ended up graduating with a 3.1, ended up getting into a master's program, did some amazing environmental work and eventually earned a PhD (with a 4.0). But today, if you are truly struggling...take a look around. Ask yourself "Would it be fair" to drop your life on someone else to sort through? I know this won't help most folks, but if it helps one then it is worth sharing.

Congrats on not giving in to the homophobic twats. You deserve life just as much as anyone else.

I also don't want to leave a messy place. When things start feeling really rough for me I start cleaning, just in case

Thank you @op I haven’t heard any one speak on this topic like that. Sorry about finding out who you’re real friends are. I believe it’s 1/2

A hard part of all of our journeys. Take no shit and leave no mess lol. Idk where you are and it’s not important. Sending love your way

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Suicidal people often think "They'll be better off without me." Researchers say they've never met a relative who said, "I'm glad." 1/2

2/2 Sauce: uhhhhhhhh... am therapist, can't find the article I read now.

I learned a cool fact about you today @OP: You've survived 100% of your worst days. Keep that up. You've got this.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Staying cause I don't want to cause harm to my family, especially my niece and I got a dog that loves me and wouldn't understand

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Your pets wouldn't know what happened to you

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah yes. Your dirty sister.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See Jordan Peterson doesnt know wtf hes talking about. Where would OP be if his room was clean? Dead. That's where

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They say that susicide doesnt end the pain it just transfers it to someone else. i am glad you saw that too.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Moral of the story, don’t clean your room. It could save your life. ?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanx for sharing. I'm glad you had not sunk down below the depth where you cared about burdening sis.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

keep moving and keep loving you can do it

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I was 11 and sitting in the forest with a knife getting ready to cut my throat open I decided I would never cause that sort of pain 1/

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to my loved ones, that decision has been all that has stopped me from ending my life during some very dark times, and given how much 2/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

better my life is nowadays (I'm 32 now and my life has been steadily improving for the last 10 years or so) I'm really happy I decided I 3/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

was smart enough to make that decision and determined enough to hold onto it for over two decades. I sort of see suicide as someone moving ⅘

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

their pain to others and saw it as a selfish act and refused to be that selfish despite carving escape from unbearable mental anguish... 5/5

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sisters are terrific! Mine is all that keeps me from checking out.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OP I don’t know you, but I’m proud of you. Thank you for sharing your story! I support therapy, it has helped me become a better person.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sorry but I think it's ridiculous your parents disowned you for being gay. glad u are doing better!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OP please throw away the plant. I'm sorry your parents are such asshats. I'm so glad that I lost my faith before my kids grew up 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because they're both bi and one is trans. I hate to think how I would have been if I still believed. Challenge your parents dumbass faith!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah, it is gone. nearly 20 years ago.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is good news! I'd read this as if the story was more recent than I now realise it to be!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of people just aren't well enough to consider the mess they will leave for others. You were. Remember that, and that you have

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

compassion and self worth. Glad you had control. Keep fighting !

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This can be dangerous sometimes... In my deepest depression I always used my husband as my "I can't leave him with all this mess"... (1/?)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then one days my twisted brain told me to take him with me. Therapy helps. But relying on others to keep you alive can be dangerous.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everyone in the comments needs a hug, and from the sounds of it deserves one too. Thank you all for still being here to share.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is the most compelling argument against it - not just dumping shit on people, but the pain it will cause to people you love and love u

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Good work, I'm glad you're alive.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah... notably, depression can happen in people without chemical imbalances. The way to fix it in that case, is to accomplish your goals

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*HUGS*

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technically the apartment will be messy after you do it even if it started out clean. Also generates new bills.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, it helped... just saying for a friend

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I've been planning as well. 1) save money so I my family can buy a house after I'm gone 2) burial expenses 3) finish my first book.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But I know all this gloom is an interpretation of a world bright with possibility. I'm tired, but there's rest for the weary.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Knowing my kids are too young to understand is the only thing stopping me

4 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 1

Sending you lots of love. From a weirdo stranger but still…

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

It amazes me everyday how MUCH better my life is after therapy, medication, and time. Like leaps and bounds! Do those 3 things!

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

If you do this, no one will understand, because you won't be there to explain. Sending you my best gramma hugs, a virtual sweater, love-

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and my very best virtual cookies. Those ones are your favorites.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same. Told my therapist not to worry unless my kids all die suddenly then all bets are off

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have a little one too, and am in therapy for anxiety and depression. If you need someone to talk to, message me.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

even when they come of age, please dont leave them ...

4 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

It's even worse if they're old enough to understand what happened! My father lost his father to suicide at 14 and it realy fucked him up.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I was 25 when my dad did it. I’m 40 and severely depressed. And I still don’t understand.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They will always be too young to understand...

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'm not there, but the thought of my ex having sole custody is definitely a deterrent. If suddenly my kids were gone, I might lose it. /1

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/ but I think I'd try to make sure I take out a bit of evil instead.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m 39. My dad committed suicide. I’m still too “young” to understand. I needed him. He mattered. He was loved.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My parent committed suicide with children ages 25 and 27. I fully, cognitively understand why. I can even sympathize to an extent. It's (1)

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

been 15 years. We are not ok. We never will be. The pain last far longer than a sink full of dishes and box full of bills. We will never (2)

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

not feel abandoned, like we weren't worth living for. Your adult children will need you. Your future grandchildren will need you. (3)

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The pain in unceasing and generational. Death is permanent. The world needs you in it. I'm so sorry you are suffering. I have suffered (4)

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

through suicidal thoughts as well. It is excruciating. Please, please stay. My love and full heart go out to you.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have that fear with natural death as well. My husband has access to all my accounts but won't remember. Poor guy would drown.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Use a password manager like e.g. KeePass, so he only has to remember 1 password.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then write it all up.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey @op I have a therapy session scheduled but I don't know if I'll keep it or weasel out. I don't know how to tell anyone irl

4 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Just show up. You don’t have to come up with anything to talk about, or even be upset that day. Just show up.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do it dude. Then come back here and tell me how it went (sorry I can't access chat)

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Keep it!! The flood of relief after just one therapy session spent spilling all of your thoughts is amazing!

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You got this.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

First session is hardest. But once you go, it will really help you. Finding this out myself right now. You got this you beautiful bastard!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It can feel like a really intense weird thing to go your first time, but that's ok! It's really therapeutic to go let it all out to someone

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

with no stake in your life, that can just be an objective listener.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Keep it. If you don't like it you don't have to go back, but you won't know if you do not go.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was the same way. I weaseled out. Things spiraled so far down now I'm too paranoid of involuntary holds to ever seek help again.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I told my therapist I was actively suicidal (but didnt have a plan to do it) and she let me go. Involuntary holds r less common than u think

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In short, do it now because you don't want to see if life really gives second chances. Take the first.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well friend, I'm not the best one for advice but I hope you haven't given up completely. We could both have a chance.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll be good, my dude. Just trust me and take the metaphorical leap. Otherwise the only way to go is worse.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

‘I’m really struggling.’

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just focus on a few short sentences.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sorry ‘just’ isn’t right. It will be hard to do. It will be worth it. You are worth trying.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks. I talked to a MD about depression a while back and dam just broke. I didn't even know it was that bad.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I’ve had that happen too. Denial is an important survival tool, so you can get through until you’re safe to talk and work it out.
