The entire EU bans the import of all plastic products intended for a single use where there is a nonplastic alternative available. For now this includes plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks, and cotton buds.

Go to any bar or fastfood place in the EU and you can take handfuls of biodegradable paper straws. They go soft after about 30mins but 70% of plastic in the ocean comes from single use plastic so 0.5 billion people not using them any more is a fairly big deal.

In looking it up I also note that several other countries including locations in the US are also increasingly doing the same, so hopefully with more things like that we might be able to slow and limit an exponential buildup of microplastics that will be a catastrophe for the planet's future oceans.
