She was found in Carmel, California, rolling in the surf alone and crying.

Her rescuers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Otter Program suspect she was separated from her mother by high waves that swept her away and washed her ashore.

The pup's mom couldn't be found.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium sea otter expert who found the pup, walked up and down the shore with the 4 week old otter cradled in his arms, scanning the waves for any distressed adult otters that might be her mother. If mom were in the vicinity, she would recognize her pup’s piercing cries and possibly swim to shore to retrieve her. But no otters responded, and the pup, too young to survive on her own, was taken to Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The pup needed a home!

The pup might have been paired with one of the aquarium’s adult female otters in a unique technique that employs surrogate mothers to raise stranded pups for release back into the wild. Because a surrogate was not available, the next option was to find a qualified permanent home for the pup.

Luckily, the Shedd Aquarium had room available in their sea otter exhibit!

To get her ready for her big move to Chicago, the pup got acclimated to face-to-face human care during swimming practice...

grooming sessions...

and bottle feeding.

Karl Mayer, part of the Sea Otter Program, reported: “She’s a very robust and feisty pup...She’s diving consistently down to the bottom of her pool, she’s retrieving food and rocks and shells, and she’s very dexterous with her paws.”

Look at that face!

Monterrey Bay Aquarium: class act all the way, and a worthy cause

Not trying to be pedantic, but Monterey in California, Monterrey in Mexico. Source: live in Monterey a mile from the aquarium. Common mixup!

So glad that things worked out well for the little fuzzball....those first two pictures are just heartbreaking.

+1 for Shedd's Aquarium, too. I want to visit Monterey Bay someday, but Shedd's is an amazing place, too!

I like how she rolls into the water. Like "oh dear, I'm falling off the edge! Just kidding- bye losers."

No problem! The moment I saw this cutie my heart grew 3 sizes and I was compelled by forces beyond my control to share her!

The Shed Aquarium in Chicago is one of the best I've ever been at. If you're ever there, make time to see it and the Field museum.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If there is ever that is cuter than otters, the world might implode.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They're cute until you see some river otters take down a crocodile.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

sad to think maybe momma will always wonder what happened to her pup

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking about poor mom out in the sea looking for her baby and it makes me sad!!! At least her baby is OK and on to a good home!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mothers frequently have these little lovers in pairs, so she is probably putting all her efforts into its brother or sister.

Otter 501 is an entire show dedicated to Monterey Bay otter rehab program. I used to watch it every week on netflix. Highly recommended!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That doc is soooooo good! Everyone should go watch it!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Awww such a cute sea puppy.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Your parents dropped you on your head a lot as a child didn't they?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

I went to the Shedd last week, but she wasn't out yet.. I did get to spend an hour with a penguin!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

How?? I've been to the Shedd many times and never got this amazing opportunity ='( (maybe because I always go on free days..)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's a ticket package that I paid for.. but it was very informative and the penguin was so cute!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm I'll have to look into that. Thank you! I bet, penguins are the cutest ♥

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bet he never called you back. Effing penguins...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's poor mom think it's dead. I am so glad they found it but I feel so bad for it's mom.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're a monster.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I agree. The whole post made me cry.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hate to suggest it, but maybe it's the mom who's dead ( ._.)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How have we not domesticated these?

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Because they can bite mussels into pieces and they have little trouble severing a finger, or two as with one hapless fellow I saw.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish to fund the research necessary!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Did you see its fucking TEETH!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dogs and cats have teeth too. Bird beaks are pretty sharp. Yet dogs, cats, and birds are all kept as pets with minimal injury

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

a 25 lb River Otter has a bite force comparable to a German shepherd. Yes that's irrelevant but Otters would be too much of a handful

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well that certainly makes a difference...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They live in the ocean.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Time for a trip to the Shedd to see this fluffball

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

For the love of god, buy tickets in advance if your serious. Or dont I guess, Im not your boss

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what days do you go? I rarely buy in advance and just show up and hardly have to wait in line.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We went on a Friday morning last June and it was chaos.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did go on one of the free days once. that was crazy. I think the Komodos were in town for that one.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of my favorite places on earth and they do such an amazing work!

10 years ago | Likes 626 Dislikes 6

Why didn't they keep the pup in Monterey?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MBA has a relatively small exhibit for otters and can only house and feed so many, I'd guess.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Poor little one looses his family :(

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went there this summer. Incredible place.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My mom's friends mother worked there when I was young so he got us free tickets all the time

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live near the Shedd (not in Chicago, I'm fine) and next time I visit maybe I'll get to see her!

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I was born in Monterey so does that count?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's awesome to see other people from the Monterey Bay on here.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I grew up in the area and went there all the time on field trips and such. I love that place.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Took my kids there in January for their 1st visit. They loved it. We're planning on more visits soon.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hell right, @OP! I LOVE THE JELLIES!!!!!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

MBA is awesome! I live pretty close by and visit fairly often

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Visited California for the first time last October. It was one of my favorite places to visit.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Saw a PBS special on the place in '94, wanted to see it ever since (I'm 26). Got to visit last week. I cried when I saw the otters.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm so lucky to have grown up close by. It's still one of my favorite places in the world.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Question: does this little guy have other otters to play with or relate to? Or is he the only otter there?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Totally agree, it's really awesome

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Shedd in Chicago is astounding for an indoor aquarium. Makes our New England Aquarium in Boston look like a fucking Koi Pond.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hello fellow Bostonian! Clearly, need to go to the The Shedd!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Hello Bostonian! They have BELUGA WHALES that perform a show at theirs! It's HUGE. Plus Chitown is a great city.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BELUGA WHALES! Wow!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Shedd is beautiful but the Georgia aquarium has a freaking whale shark. Talk about making other aquariums look small.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've heard of that but have yet to visit Atlanta aside from a layover at O'Hare. Someday though, it does look impressive!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn. I've seen koi ponds, but never noticed them spawning...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in Carmel... too expensive for a membership so I only go when it's locals free once a year! :)

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Call up and ask, I got in for a locals thing around Thanksgiving.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no way, Im from monterey.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yay Monterey locals! Should we have an imgur party at Lallapolooza?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They were doing one day a month for locals a while ago. Not sure if they are still though as now I have access to season passes.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

last time I went it was for a week in December!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They did that for their 25th anniversary. There's community open house twice a year for the Tri County area!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didnt know there were that many locals on here, monterey bay locals unite!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

look there are half-dozens of us!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

neither did I! it's crazy!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How tf do you afford Carmel? Jesus friggin Seaside feels too expensive to me.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

that's why I'm moving to Monterey in a month! I go to mpc but work in Carmel so either way I have to drive a bunch

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I live right up the hill from mpc. That traffic between aguajito and Carmel is so annoying!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I go there at least once a year! Was kind of sad when their "Living Art" exhibit had to go, but it was in the temporary exhibit wing.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Was that the jellyfish exhibit?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep that's the one, where they had a bunch of blown glass depictions of jellyfish at the entrance of the exhibit

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I looked for it the last time I was there and it was gone! : ( Now I know why.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A bunch of the jellyfish exhibits git moved to the Open Sea exhibit. If you enter it through the foyer you walk through them.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chicago says thanks for the new pup... it cuuuuuute

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm from the UK and visiting California in June. The sea otters and the aquarium are on our list of road trip stops!!! Excited!!

definitely go down to big sur when you're there! I live in Carmel & no where in the world can compare to it!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where else are you going in California? I'm just curious. The Aquarium is fantastic! The whole area up there is fantastic!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Flying into LA, then to SF to see friends camping near Lake Tahoe, driving back to La from SF stopping 2-3 nuts on the way - excited!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went to college up there and have plenty of places to recommend.
