I know a guy who grew up with both parents being psychologists and it does not seem to have done him any favors. Of course the household also included his dad's girlfriend and a bunch of fucked up drama between her and his mom.
From what I heard, it's good to not just tell your kids "no" or what they have to do, but to also tell them why. All those kids who are like: "I can't wait until I'm an adult and I get to do this as much as I want." are just kids who were never told why.
It's a good joke, but you make a mistake if you think psychologists will ever defend themselves with facts in an informal setting. ;D We'll just say something unhinged.
Also acceptance is key, so the last bit is very good advice.
No problem, I've been having horrible ones lately, any tips that might help can only be a good thing! Figured I mustn't be the only one, so thought it was worth sharing š¤·
Unfortunately intelligence & learning aptitude are not necessarily transmitted generation to generationā¦and Wigner deserves to be capitalized. I gotta go sit down.
This is why I play D&D. It's an easy something I can turn my thoughts to when they get too... intense. I can always start planning the next twist or the next magic item I have in store for my party.
When I was younger we had a family friends whose mother was a child psych. And the worst mom I've ever seen. No hyperbole. One younger kid wet the bed - made him sleep in it. The middle child had such severe anger issues he had to constantly listen to CDs to calm down. She had two volumes: screaming and screeching.
Oh yeah. We were having a sleepover when she made him sleep in the piss bed. That's how she behaved with company. I can't imagine what happened privately. Depressingly ironic.
There was a girl in my class who was super weird, then I learned she had a brother. They both had awkward mannerisms, poor social skills, clearly no idea how to present themselves (dress fashionably), etc. I felt bad for them because I realized they were products of some sort of shared environment. Learned both their parents were psychologists. Their dad gave off vibes like he was a serial killer from decades prior, so when his son groped a girl it seemed⦠predictable?
This is the most accurate to my life post Iād ever seen. Growing up around the dinner table was discussions of psychology principles and thought experiments. One of the very first books my dad ever reccomended to me was āMy Ishmaelā (I didnāt really get it at the time, a couple years later it landed) and it was startling to me how so many around me didnāt understand their own feelings, until I realised I effectively had two therapists on call for my entire life
Reminds me of the French family that got out of their car at a Dutch safari zoo with free roaming animals only to get stalked and then chased by the Cheeta's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwW2aAPAAZw
I would love that. But my brain gets wired & excited with new info. So not a lullaby for me. Maybe someone should wake me up like that tho. I might be willing to get out of bed for that
I used to read my ancient Egyptian literature readings to my younger daughter. After a couple of paragraphs as to the pronunciation of a specific hieroglyph in different contexts she'd be fast asleep.
That's why I think about DnD at night. I enjoy coming up with new characters and plot lines, and it's real easy to focus on that than some embarrassing thing I did in highschool.
Sorta figured this out myself, used to have lot of earworms from random popsongs I heard, but didn't like as I grew up. Learned that best way to get rid of them was to replace it with another earworm that didn't annoy me. Namely Hot Butter - Popcorn (Only tune I could conjure up at will at any given time) and just loudly "yell" it in my head over the earworm. Soon the earworm would be just Popcorn, which then died because it wasn't getting too much negative attention.
Ha! Totally works. My song of choice is the ever catchy and not bothersome to me "Girl from Ipanema" (hopefully that's implanted that song in at least some of your heads).
I do this too! Started also singing it in my head at night to help prevent songs intruding when falling asleep. Now it has become a sort of meditation and even helps me fall asleep. I use a weird song from the 90s
But that requires to listen to the song, which wasn't something you could just do in 90's. And now.. I don't know if I can stomach it, some of these morern pop songs are outright vile :P
It was a guy who had been shot multiple times in his car. He somehow managed to prop himself up with his arm hanging out the window for support and drive himself to the hospital, bleeding down the side of his car as he went. I was in high school and had to take my mom to the ER at the same time and happened to be outside coming back from the parking garage as they were dealing with him at the entrance.
So, what i got from this is that Compartmentalization helps, when you give another focus after addressing the intrusive thought.
"Yes yes worrisome thoughts, you're important but that's a tomorrow item, now it is time for me to recite my mental story of being a spaceship captain....."
It helped me (or, a play on it) to quit a ten+ year drinking habit. Whenever the urge came, I changed what I was doing. Reading and really fucking want a drink? Play a game. Happens again? Put on music. Again? Watch TV. Just cycling what I was doing for a long fucking time till the urges went away. I do this, and another technique, for self injury urges, too. Although that one is more intermittent tattoo work to meet that urge without, you know, heating a wrench up and burning myself.
It's funny, I knew someone in college who dealt with BPD by getting new piercings. There was some evidence that exercise could induce catecholamine release, which helps with mood symptoms. So she'd get piercings and that has similar effect physically and would smooth out her fluctuations in mood. When she got time and money to go to therapy, piercings were replaced with going to the gym every morning.
Or, it's bed time and the world is falling apart around me bit I can't do anything about it unless I force myself to think about pleasant fantasies until I temporarily die for 6-9 hours.
Captain's log, Sir Loki Richards of the Tycho Brahe speaking. We've been decelerating toward Pallas station at 1.5 g for the last four shifts. Communications officer Evans attempted to contact STC at Pallas when we did our turnover, and wasn't able to get a response... or at least, she didn't get a response that made sense. The station is visible in our scopes, and I can see that the nav bouys have been shut down. The nav lights and radio have been off since the strange broadcast from the...
Oh no, that was off the top of my head. I did have to hit wikipedia to find a couple of dwarf planets in the asteroid belt that weren't Ceres or Eros so it wouldn't sound like a fanfic for the expanse, but oops. The captain's name was taken from the commenter I responded to.
Just like it's much easier to start a new habit than to quit an old one without something to fill the void. Quitting overeating? Pick up smoking! Quitting smoking? Pick up toothpick chewing! Quitting toothpick chewing? Suck dicks behind the Wendy's dumpster!

I think sometimes people go into the field of psychology to better understand their own mental illness.

My earworm remedy is to just listen to the whole song, or try to sing the 'end' of the song. It closes the loop in the autistic brain.
